Holy Events in Ferndale, Batman!

The events in Ferndale this month are out of control! There is no escaping them. Just submit and attend the many structured (as in candidate forums) and/or fun (as in Camp Casey Fest and the Hilton Fall Festival) events October in Ferndale has to offer.

Ferndale is no stranger to holding an event ... so why should the October be any different?

This month, the month of Halloween (and election campaigns), Ferndale has some of the more serious-type events — from political forums to Ferndale Public Schools meet-and-greets — but also a few of the more fun events such as Camp Casey Fest and the Hilton Fall Festival.

Here's a breakdown of a few of the major happenings on our dial (side note: we're pretty sure there is stuff missing from this list, so feel free to add in the comments section):

Wednesday:

  • The Ferndale Seniors will hold a meet-and-greet with the five candidates running for the three local government seats on the Nov. 8 ballot. The event takes place at 11:30 a.m. at the . The candidates will speak for five minutes, saying why they are running, and then the event will be opened to the audience to go and meet them.
  • The is sponsoring a candidate forum immediately following the Ferndale Seniors meet-and-greet. at the Kulick Center. It's open to the public, and the FACC will provide pizza. Nothing goes with politics like a slice of pizza.
  • Principal Dina Rocheleau will facilitate the parenting workshop "Conscious Discipline," which is sponsored by the Ferndale Youth Assistance. The workshop lasts from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Roosevelt. "Conscious discipline" is a process that promotes permanent behavior change in parents and children. Read more about it . To register, call the Ferndale Youth Assistance at 248-586-8700.

Saturday:

  • The , sponsored by the , will take place from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at the school. Indoor and outdoor activities for all ages will include games, inflatables, a climbing wall, a boo-tique (get it?), crafts, a haunted hallway, a silent auction, food and beverages and a 50/50 raffle. Tickets may be purchased at the front door of the cafeterias.
  • Lisa McMann, Michigan native and New York Times best-selling author of young-adult books The Wake Trilogy and Cryer's Cross, has a new book out: The Unwanteds (for ages 8-12). She will speaking about her books and sign them from 2:30-4 p.m. at the . Books will be available for purchase.
  • It's about to get serious — seriously awesome — with at the football field, the Ferndale Golden Eagles Marching Band will perform its newest routine, "(No) Strings Attached," after which three local bands will play. Oh, and then on top of that, the event features a chili taste test. Ticket and admission proceeds go toward the marching band. Come out, enjoy the music, support the kids and eat some chili.
  • Here it is, the event of the decade ... but which decade? The 1980s, of course. The Friends of the Ferndale Library is holding an '80s prom. From 8 p.m.-midnight (if you're 21 or older, because adult beverages will be served), head over to the to relive the decade made famous by John Hughes and Bret Easton Ellis. To purchase tickets, which cost $25 per person, visit ferndalefriends.org. Ticket proceeds go toward teen books and teen programs for the library.
  • East Nine Mile, west of Bermuda, will be shut down from 11 a.m.-11 p.m. for all the cowgirls and boys out there as is finally here. The event will benefit , a nonprofit group that provides horseback riding programs and events for children with cancer. The event features not only local country star Josh Gracin but will also televise the Michigan State/University of Michigan football game, which is the same day.

Oct. 22:

  • The Ferndale Schools Eagles Pledge, a group that aims to help Ferndale grads with financial resources and support, at 7:30 p.m. at the auditorium. The Friars are an elite eight-student a cappella group from the University of Michigan Men's Glee Club. Tickets are available online at brownpapertickets.com (search Eagles Pledge Friar concert), at the Pleasant Ridge Recreation Center (4 Ridge Rd.), , Ferndale schools' school offices, by phone at 800-838-3066 or at the auditorium door.
  • The is here. From 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Hilton Road north of Lewiston Street will become a buzz of activities, games and children. The Hilton Fall Festival will feature children's activities, pony rides, a costume contest, a pet costume contest, a haunted tent and live music and entertainment. Cost is $5 per person.

Oct. 23:

  • Back to politics, 'cause it's that time of the year. The Citizens for a Fair Ferndale is holding a Ferndale candidates forum at 1 p.m. at the Ferndale Public Library.

Oct. 29:

  • Have a questions for Ferndale Superintendent Gary Meier? Now is your chance to ask it. Ferndale Public Schools is holding a meet-and-greet from 10 a.m.-noon at the . It's a child-friendly event for prospective families to learn more about the district. Meier, as well as staff and faculty, will be on hand, so ask away.

Oct. 30:

  • Get your bowling on for youths: The Ferndale Youth Assistance will hold its annual Bowl-A-Thon from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Luxury Lands. For more details, to participate or to volunteer, click here.
