Hazardous Weather Outlook Issued

Thunderstorms moving through the area this afternoon and evening could bring hail, heavy rains and even tornadoes, the National Weather Service warns.

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for portions of southeast Michigan, including Oakland County.

Thunderstorms moving through the area this afternoon and evening, mainly between 5 p.m. and midnight, could bring dangerous weather, the forecasting agency warns.

"The strongest storms will be capable of producing wind gusts to 70 (miles per hour) and hail to one inch in diameter," according to the NWS. "There is also a slight chance of tornadoes. Any thunderstorm that develops will also produce very intense rainfall. Thus localized flooding is possible."

If flooding occurs, the weather service advises:

  • Act quickly; do not enter the water.
  • Do not drive your vehicle into areas where water covers the roadway.
  • Report flooding to the nearest law enforcement agency.
  • Turn around and move to higher ground to escape floodwaters.
  • Do not stay in areas subject to flooding when water begins rising.

Thunderstorms also will be possible Friday and Sunday, the NWS says. If you experience a power outage, call DTE at 800-477-4747.
