Purim Shpiel

Why go:  This is classic puppetry at its best. The founders of Detroit Puppet Theater trained in classical puppetry arts in the Soviet Union. They’ve made their marionettes by hand with colorful costumes, plus there’s lively music and Persian scenery. It’s the Book of Esther’s story about the poor Jewish girl Esther, who marries the powerful King Ahasveros, and then with the help of her uncle Mordechai, manages to overthrow the King’s evil, anti-semitic minister Haman.

Where: Detroit Puppet Theater, 25 East Grand River, Detroit

When: 2 p.m. each Saturday in March through March 26

Cost: $10 adults, $5 children. Puppetry workshop after the performance, $8/project
