Ferndale Farmer's Market Kicks off at the Kulick Center Today

Seven vendors are expected to come out for the new-look Farmers Market in Ferndale.

Though this is the Ferndale Farmer's Market's third year of existence, this time around, it's a little different.

The first two years the Ferndale Farmer's Market, organized by Trevor Johnson, had one table with produce from the Ferndale Community Garden near Eight Mile in .

This year, he said, they are diversifying and will have as many as seven vendors on hand Saturday at the from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

"The intention is to try and facilitate an avenue for the kitchen businesses, the ma and pa shops, to take their ideas to the next step and to support them," Johnson said. "Having a market helps these businesses and provides a local product."

The vendors include the Royal Oak Township Community Garden; a necklace, cookie and jam maker; and Treats for a Cause, which makes organic dog treats where all proceeds go toward a local charity

Johnson said the market is starting late in the year because the spring didn't have a good enough yield for gardeners.

"We hope to provide a place for people who don't have a venue to get it out," Johnson said. "We hope to have a space where someone doesn't have to depend on that hourly wage and still make a living."

The Ferndale Farmer's Market will be at the Gerry Kulick Community Center this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
