Cool Off at Gerry Kulick Community Center

Facility acts as cooling center so kids and seniors can stop in for a game, hang out and have lunch as a way to cool off during this week's heat wave.

You don't need Ferndale Patch to tell you it will be hot outside this week. You can look out your window and see the brown grass and the haze coming off the sidewalk.

But don't you worry. The is here to alleviate some of the heat pain.

During heat advisories or Ozone Action Days – basically days when it is going to be unbearably hot – the Kulick Center offers itself up as a cooling center.

Monday through Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., those who need to cool off can head over to 1201 Livernois to chill, literally. Patrons will have access to specific rooms at the center, which will include board games and television.

Lunch will also be served from 11:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Lunch is $3 for those 55 and up and $6 for everyone else.

"Kids are probably our No. 1 users this week," Ferndale Recreation Director Julie Hall said, though seniors do come in, too.

The Kulick Center also offers an option for those who don't have a way to get to the center. The SMART transportation program is available for a ride to the Kulick Center.

"We service Ferndale and Pleasant Ridge residents," Hall said. "The cost is $2 each one way trip."

To schedule a ride call 248-867-2742.

"It is important that we provide services for our residents, especially when the temperatures are this high," Hall said. "Some may not be able to afford air conditioning and others may have things happen outside of their control such as a power outage.

"For those with health conditions, excessive heat may pose additional risks. So, a public service such as this is important."
