5 Ferndale Things to Do to Beat the Heat

It's going to be a scorcher this week, as they say. So Ferndale Patch put together a few things to do to stay cool.

How about these numbers: 93, 94, 100, 94 and 91.

High, right?

Well, time to get ready because those are what Ferndale will be dealing with for temps for the next five days.

The National Weather Service — the organization whose job it is to tell us how hot it'll be (among other things) — said in an heat advisory alert that southeast Michigan will face some of the hottest weather in 15 years.

"The heat wave this week is expected to be the longest duration of hot and humid conditions since July of 1995," the alert said.

So, with summer fully upon us and burning up the pavement, Ferndale Patch put together five things (in no particular order) that one could do to beat the heat.

  • Go to the . It has air conditioning, books, music and free (and fast) Wi-Fi. If you're at home with the children or looking for something to do in the afternoon to get out of the home and into some AC (presuming you don't have AC), the library is a pretty good bet. Extra tip: Spend your entire day in Ferndale AC locations.
  • If you don't have AC, buy a fan for every window in your home. We understand this could get expensive; however, it'll be the only way to keep your home from being 10 degrees hotter inside than outside. It might also behoove you to buy a few extra to strategically place throughout the rooms and hallways of your home to get maximum airflow. Extra tip: Put a bowl of ice in front of your fan so that it will blow cool air on you. Then use the water from the melting ice to water your plants — or to make more AC ice (aka hobo air condition).
  • Befriend someone who lives in Pleasant Ridge and try to get a guest pass to the community pool. Ferndale, unfortunately, doesn't have one, though sometimes the catch drains clog and "pools" form after a heavy rain. Our friendly neighbors to the north have a pool, but the catch is that you have to be a PR resident. Make a Ridger friend and see if they can get you in. Extra tip: Get a kiddie pool, but turn it into an adult chill-out and cool-down basin.
  • Don't move. If you put a fan on yourself and lay perfectly still from sunup to sundown, you should be OK. When the sun goes down, the heat will break a little, and you should be able to get out and about. Extra tip: Get a spray bottle and spritz yourself every five minutes.
  • Go to a movie at the Magic Bag, catch a show at Go Comedy! Improv Theatre, see a production at the Ringwald or grab breakfast/lunch/dinner/drink at Ferndale's many establishments. We realize that these will all cost something, but ... it's so hot! Being cool costs a few bucks.

What are your tips for staying cool this week?
