Ribbon-Cutting in Ferndale Kicks Off 2013 Woodward Dream Cruise

Elected officials and special guests helped kick off the 2013 Woodward Dream Cruise during a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday in Ferndale.

The celebration included a performance by Dance Motion Xplosion, an appearance by Mrs. Michigan America Laura Zdravkovski and speeches by Ferndale Mayor Dave Coulter, County Commissioner Helaine Zack, state Sen. Vincent Gregory and United States Rep. Gary Peters, among others.

"Take a few minutes to spend some time and spend a little money in Ferndale," Gregory urged the crowd gathered Friday at the corner of Nine Mile Road and Woodward Avenue.

The Woodward Dream Cruise, which will roar up and down Woodward Avenue from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, got its start in Ferndale, which still serves as the classic car parade's symbolic starting point.

"Planning for a 1995 Dream Cruise began in Ferndale in November 1994 as a fundraiser for a community project – most immediately a new soccer field. Resident Nelson House headed the committee, supported by the City Council," according to the Ferndale Historical Society. "Hopes were that a few hundred 'muscle cars' would be on display July 15. Then the next day was to be a parade on Woodward, from Marshall to Woodard Heights."

What a difference 19 years make.
