Mental Attitude: Autism Rates Up 30% in Just Two Years. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the number of children in the United States with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has soared approximately 30% in the past two years. CDC researchers now estimate that 1 in 68 children have ASD in comparison to 1 in 88 in 2012. Dr. Coleen Boyle, director of the CDC's National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities, adds, "Community leaders, health professionals, educators and childcare providers should use these data to ensure children with ASD are identified as early as possible and connected to the services they need." The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, March 2014

Health Alert: Vitamin D Deficiency Equals Greater Risk of Severe Heart Disease. Recent research suggests that lower levels of vitamin D are associated with a higher presence and severity of coronary artery disease. Research leader Dr. Monica Verdoia writes, "Present results suggest vitamin D deficiency to be the cause rather than the consequence of atherosclerosis." Recent studies also support that low levels of vitamin D are linked to an increased risk of heart disease; however, it is still not clear if vitamin D supplementation helps reduce that risk. American College of Cardiology, March 2014

Diet: Another Reason to Stop Smoking! For those who are already overweight, smoking cigarettes may lead to even more weight gain. In this study, researchers found that obese smokers were less able to experience the taste of fatty and sugary foods than non-smokers. The study's lead author, Dr. M. Yanina Pepino, writes, "Obese people often crave high-fat foods… Our findings suggest that having this intense craving but not perceiving fat and sweetness in food may lead these [people] to eat more. Since smoking and obesity are risk factors for cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, the additional burden of craving more fats and sugars, while not fully tasting them, could be detrimental to health." Obesity, April 2014

Exercise: Protein Followed by Exercise Leads to More Effective Calorie Burning. A new report finds that women who consume a high-protein meal before moderate exercise burn calories more effectively than women who exercise on an empty stomach. Study author Dr. Ashley Binns writes, “We found that with exercise, there is a trend for a continued increase in caloric expenditure with higher protein consumption. Additionally, the consumption of the high- or low-protein meals resulted in greater energy expenditure than the fasted state. That means that eating prior to exercise does provide fuel to burn, making us more like an energy-burning machine.” Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport, March 2014

Chiropractic: Treatment for Colic. A study of 316 infants suffering from colic showed improvements of symptoms in 94% of cases when the babies were treated with skilled spinal manipulation. The finding supports gentle chiropractic care as a treatment to improve colic symptoms. Journal of Manipulative Physiological Therapeutics, August 1989

Wellness/Prevention: Controlling Blood Pressure After Stroke Reduces Stroke Recurrence. Past research has shown that approximately 5-14% of stroke suffers will have a second stroke within one year. New research suggests that the risk of a second stroke can be reduced by more than 50% if blood pressure is consistently controlled. Researchers say patients need to regularly monitor and control their blood pressure as well as learn how to control overall risk factors for stroke. Reducing salt intake, eating a healthy diet that includes whole grains, fruit and vegetables, and exercise can all help reduce stroke risk. The American Heart Association, March 2014
