Mental Attitude: Mood is Catchy on Facebook. Investigators analyzed one billion anonymous status updates among 100 million Facebook users and found that feelings can be highly contagious. Lead researcher Dr. James Fowler explains, "Online networks can spread emotions just like the real world." His team found that for every happy post a person makes, it causes friends to write an additional one or two happy posts; likewise, every negative post spawns another negative post.  PLOS ONE, March 2014

Health Alert: Slightly Higher Blood Pressure May Elevate Stroke Risk. High blood pressure has been known to be a risk factor for stroke, but a new study that followed over 760,000 participants for up to 36 years suggests that even people with pre-hypertension (higher than normal blood pressure but not defined as high blood pressure) have a 66% greater risk of suffering a stroke. Neurology, April 2014

Diet: Eating Animal Protein May Prevent Functional Decline in Older Men. Recent studies have not been supportive of consuming animal protein, but new research suggests that consuming a diet high in animal protein may help older men function at higher physical, psychological, and social levels. Investigators suggest that aging reduces the ability to absorb protein and that protein requirement increases as we age. The study found that men who consumed the most animal protein were 39% less likely to encounter higher-level functional decline compared with those who consumed the least amount of animal protein. Interestingly, researchers did not observe the same link in women. Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, March 2014

Exercise: Think Better! A review of existing literature finds that not only does regular exercise keep the body fit, but it also keeps the mind sharp as it ages. Studies performed on older adults show that more-fit participants outperform less-fit participants on tests measuring cognitive function. Other studies have shown that mental scores improve when unfit participants engage in an aerobic fitness program. Psychonomic Bulletin & Review, February 2014

Chiropractic: Help For Bell’s Palsy. In this case study, a 49-year-old women with Bell’s palsy presented for a trial of chiropractic care. Bell’s palsy involves one sided facial paralysis, which can last for weeks. She also suffered from neck pain and temporomandibular joint pain. Chiropractic manipulation was performed to her spine and jaw. Her response to care was positive with continued improvements during six months of treatment. Journal of Manipulative Physiological Therapeutics, May 2003

Wellness/Prevention: Living or Working Near Fast Food Restaurants May Make You Obese? A new report suggests that exposure to fast food restaurants increases a person's likelihood of becoming obese. Researchers observed that the more individuals were exposed to fast food near work, home, or during their commute, the more fast food they consumed and the greater their risk for being obese compared with the least exposed individuals. The findings are significant, but researchers say this type of study cannot confirm there is a causal link between obesity and environment. British Medical Journal, March 2014
