Mental Attitude: Biomarker Discovered for Depression in Teenage Boys. Researchers have discovered the first biomarker that could predict clinical depression in teenage boys. In the study, boys with symptoms of depression had cortisol levels 14 times higher in their saliva than boys with no depressive symptoms. A much smaller difference was noted among girls. The authors say the newly discovered biomarker - high cortisol levels and symptoms of depression - could help healthcare providers to identify boys who are at high risk for depression. The University of Cambridge, February 2014

Health Alert: Smoking May Increase the Risk of Common Type of Breast Cancer. A new report reveals that women who have smoked a pack a day for ten or more years have a 60% increased risk of developing estrogen receptor positive breast cancer. This is the most common subtype of breast cancer. The researchers found that smoking was not related to a woman’s risk of triple-negative breast cancer, which is rarer but more aggressive. Cancer, February 2014

Diet: Fruit Juice Not as Healthy as You Think. Some researchers argue that fruit juice is just as bad for you as sugar-sweetened beverages. Fruit juice has come under fire since medical experts recently started looking more closely at the link between high sugar intake and the risk for heart disease. Dr. Jason Gill writes, "There seems to be a clear misperception that fruit juices and smoothies are low-sugar alternatives to sugar-sweetened beverages." Research is beginning to show that, unlike solid fruit intake, which high consumption is linked either to reduced or neutral risk for diabetes, high fruit juice intake is linked to an increased risk for diabetes. The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, February 2014

Exercise: Hormone Released After Exercise May Predict Biological Age. Scientists claim there is a significant link between irisin levels in the blood and a biological marker of aging called telomere length. Irisin is a recently identified hormone released from muscle after bouts of exercise. The study noted that healthy, non-obese individuals who had higher levels of irisin also had longer telomeres. Short telomere length has been linked to many age-related diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. James Brown from Aston's Research Centre for Healthy Ageing adds, "Exercise is known to have wide ranging benefits, from cardiovascular protection to weight loss. Recent research has suggested that exercise can protect people from both physical and mental decline with ageing. Our latest findings now provide a potential molecular link between keeping active and a healthy ageing process." AGE, January 2014

Chiropractic: Relieves Colic. A recent study reveals that colicky infants were five times less likely to cry if they were treated with chiropractic manual therapy, and their crying time was reduced by about 50% under chiropractic care compared with infants who were solely medically managed.  Journal of Manipulative Physiological Therapeutics, October 2012

Wellness/Prevention: You Make Healthier Decisions When You Are Exhausted. A soon-to-be-published study claims that consumers are more likely to take preventative measures and make healthier choices when they feel depleted, such as after a workout or at the end of a long day. Journal of Consumer Research, June 2014
