Mental Attitude: Behavioral Therapy for Kids' Migraines? A new study supports the use of cognitive behavioral therapy to reduce the number of migraines and migraine-related disabilities in children and teens. After 12 months of treatment, 86% of those who received cognitive therapy had a 50% or greater reduction in days spent with migraines. The study's authors believe that cognitive therapy should be added to all migraine treatments and should be covered by all health insurance plans. Journal of the American Medical Association, December 2013

Health Alert: Lung Cancer Rates are Falling! Lung cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Between 2005 and 2009, the rate of new lung cancer diagnoses fell 2.6% among men and 1.1% among women. According to Dr. Tom Frieden, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, "While it is encouraging that lung cancer incidence rates are dropping in the United States, one preventable cancer is one too many… Implementation of tobacco control strategies is needed to reduce smoking prevalence and the lung cancer it causes among men and women." Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, January 2014

Diet: Unhealthy Foods in Ads for Kids. Researchers have discovered that the nutritional value of food and beverages advertised during children’s television programs is worse than food advertised during other times. The study suggests that food and beverage companies are choosing to market less-nutritious products more heavily to children despite the 2006 Children's Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative (CFBAI) that discourages such practices. Childhood Obesity, December 2013

Exercise: Prevent Disease in Children with Exercise. A new study shows that when children increase their level of physical activity, they experience positive health benefits including decreased body fat, increased strength, and reduced risks for major diseased like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other metabolic disorders. The study involved 200 obese children who attended a six-week summer camp. One group exercised three hours in the morning and three hours in the afternoon with different activities like swimming, running, and ping pong. The other group did not participate in physical activities and served as a control. When the camp ended, the active group averaged a weight loss of 13-17 pounds (~6-8 kg) with lower blood pressure and greater glucose sensitivity than the control group. Journal of Sport and Health Science, December 2013

Chiropractic: Chiropractic Recognized by US Government. “Chiropractic is included in Medicare, Medicaid, Federal Employees Health Care Benefits Programs, Federal Workers' Compensation, and all state workers' compensation programs. Chiropractic students are qualified to receive federal student loan assistance and [Doctors of Chiropractic] are authorized to be commissioned as health care officers in the [United States] Armed Forces.” International Chiropractic Association

Wellness/Prevention: Another Reason Not to Smoke During Pregnancy! Using data on over 50,000 women over a forty-year period, a new study finds that the combination of maternal stress and smoking during pregnancy increases the risk that female offspring will develop nicotine dependence in adulthood. Biological Psychiatry, January 2014
