Mental Attitude: More Education = Better Recovery from Brain Injury. New research suggests a link between how many years of education an individual has completed and their ability to recover from a traumatic brain injury. Researcher Dr. Eric B. Schneider writes, "We need to learn more about how education helps to protect the brain and how it affects injury and resilience. Exploring these relationships will hopefully help us to identify ways to help people recover better from traumatic brain injury." American Academy of Neurology, April 2014

Health Alert: Is the “Superbug” MRSA in Your Home? A new study has found that the antibiotic-resistant “superbug” known and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), which has mainly been found in hospitals and nursing homes, has found its way into American homes. These bacteria can cause severe conditions such as pneumonia and bloodstream infections. The authors of the study believe at least one strain of MRSA (USA300) is the result of the over-prescription of the powerful antibiotics known as fluoroquinolones, of which the Ciprofloxacin (Cipro) is the most well-known.  Antimicrobial Resistance Committee, Infectious Diseases Society of America, April 2014

Diet: Wine May Help Kidney Health. New research suggests that an occasional glass of wine can help keep kidneys healthy, and moderate wine consumption may help protect the cardiovascular health of individuals who already have kidney disease. Study author Dr. Tapan Mehta explains, "Those [with healthy kidneys] who drank less than one glass of wine a day had a 37 percent lower risk of having chronic kidney disease than those who drank no wine. Those with chronic kidney disease who drank less than one glass a day had a 29 percent lower risk of cardiovascular events [than those who drank no wine]."National Kidney Foundation Meeting in Las Vegas, April 2014

Exercise: Leisure Activities Help Reduce Effects of Hard Occupational Labor. A study following over 5,200 public workers reveals that strenuous occupational physical activity during the midlife years increases the risk of mobility limitations in old age. However, leisure-time physical activity was shown to decrease this risk. Physical labor is work that is often repetitive and lasts for several hours per day, which lends itself to wear and tear over time. On the other hand, leisure-time physical activity is designed to improve fitness with sessions lasting only one to two hours. Researcher Taina Rantanen adds, "A person doing heavy manual work may compensate for its detrimental effects by participating in brisk leisure-time physical activity." The Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, April 2014

Chiropractic: Complementary Medicine in United States. Approximately 8.5% of individuals in the United States (over 25 million Americans) have been treated with manipulative therapy making this form of treatment the second most commonly used complementary medicine behind herbs and other supplements. National Center for Health Statistics, April 2014

Wellness/Prevention: Individuals Seek Health Info When Famous People Die. A survey of 1,400 men and women found that more than 30% of those questioned sought out information on pancreatic cancer and cancer in general following the death of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. Events like this provide healthcare providers an opportunity to educate the public on cancer treatment and prevention. Lead author Dr. Jessica Gall Myrick adds, "Health communicators need to act quickly to educate the public when interest and motivation are at their peak so that more lives can be saved." Journal of Health Communication, April 2014
