“Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.”~ Thomas Edison

Mental Attitude: Infections Linked to Brain Decline. A new study finds that exposure to common infections that cause bronchitis, pneumonia, and ulcers may lead to a decline in brain functions such as memory and reasoning. Researcher Dr. Clinton Wright suggests the team's finding "could be caused by an immune system response to the infections or the infection itself could result in clinical damage that we're not aware of." American Heart Association, February 2014

Health Alert: No Heart-Safety Advantage with Naproxen. An advisory panel at the United States Food and Drug Administration says the science is not convincing enough to support that naproxen is safer for the heart than other popular anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen. Current labeling laws require non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), like naproxen, to carry a warning that the use of such medications can increase a user's risk of heart attack and other life-threatening cardiac events. U.S. Food and Drug Administration, February 2014

Diet: Kids Getting More Caffeine from New Sources. A government study finds that kids are consuming more caffeine now than ever before thanks to the popularity of coffee and energy drinks. Experts agree that caffeine has no place in the diet of children, and instead of caffeinated drinks, kids should drink water and moderate amounts of juice. Pediatrics, February 2014

Exercise: Exercise Improves Heart Function. A new report suggests an explanation for why moderate, long-term physical activity appears to improve cardiovascular health. The research team found that mice that exercised for 54 weeks on a treadmill had higher levels of two proteins (kinases RAF & p38) in the mitochondria of their heart muscle cells. Previous research has shown that RAF and p38 have protective proprieties that are activated when stress is placed on the heart.  Journal of Proteome Research, February 2014

Chiropractic: Neck Arthritis Relief. A retrospective review of ten patients with arthritis of the top two vertebra yielded favorable outcomes for chiropractic care. Treatment included the combination of upper cervical manipulation and mechanical mobilization. Overall, clinical improvement was described as “good” or “excellent” in 80% of the patients. Study participants also reported an 80% improvement in pain and 90% improvement in range of motion.  Journal of Manipulative Physiological Therapeutics, February 2011

Wellness/Prevention: Improve Psychological Quality of Life by Giving Up Smoking. The UK Centre for Tobacco and Alcohol Studies recently conducted an analysis of 26 published papers to assess mental health before and at least six weeks after smoking cessation. The researchers measured mental health status by anxiety, depression, positivity, stress, and psychological quality of life and found that quitting smoking was associated with improvements in all of these factors. They write, "This could overcome barriers that clinicians have toward intervening with smokers with mental health problems. Furthermore, challenging the widely held assumption that smoking has mental health benefits could motivate smokers to stop." British Medical Journal, February 2014
