"You were born to win, but to be a winner, you must plan to win, prepare to win, and expect to win." ~ Zig Ziglar

Mental Attitude: Can We Neutralize Negative Events? Researchers claim that repeated exposure to a negative event may prevent it from affecting you. According to Dr. Moshe Shay Ben-Haim from Tel Aviv University's School of Psychological Sciences, "If you look at the newspaper before you go to work and see a headline about a bombing or tragedy of some kind, it's better to read the article all the way through and repeatedly expose yourself to the negative information. You will be freer to go on with your day in a better mood and without any negative effects." American Friends Tel Aviv University, November 2013

Health Alert: Watch Out for Distracted Drivers! A new study finds that distracted drivers in the United States are killing an increasing number of pedestrians and bicyclists. From 2005 to 2010, the number of bicyclists killed by distracted drivers has increase by 30%, while pedestrians killed by distracted drivers increased by nearly 50% over the same period. Study author Dr. Fernando Wilson states, "We're constantly exposed to distracted drivers. I don't think there's a day that I don't see someone driving and using their cell phone. A lot of times they're texting… It's something that's pervasive in society. That's one of the reasons it's so difficult to deal with." University of Nebraska Medical Center, November 2013

Diet: Death from Food Allergies is Rare. Severe food allergies can result in anaphylaxis, which causes swelling and breathing difficulties. Investigators determined that any person with a food allergy has a 1.81 in a million chance of dying from anaphylaxis over a one-year period. Dr. Robert Boyle of the Department of Medicine at Imperial College London adds, “We don't want to belittle the concerns of people with food allergies or their families, and of course people should continue to take reasonable precautions.” Clinical and Experimental Allergy, November 2013

Exercise: Decreased Risk of Kidney Stones! Two decades of data on 84,225 postmenopausal women has linked a 31% decreased risk of developing kidney stones to just three hours of walking per week, four hours of light gardening per week, or one hour of jogging per week. Women who consumed over 2,200 calories per day also had a 42% greater risk of developing kidney stones. American Society of Nephrology, December 2013

Chiropractic: Twelve Visits for Chronic Low Back Pain. One hundred patients with chronic low back pain received four different doses of chiropractic care: 0, 6, 12 or 18 sessions of chiropractic adjustments. Ongoing evaluations regarding pain, functional disability, pain unpleasantness, global perceived improvement, medication use, and general health status were performed up to a year after treatment commenced. The authors of the study concluded that at least twelve visits were required to yield the most favorable results. Spine, October 2013

Wellness/Prevention: No Safe Level of Drinking During Pregnancy.  Scientists studying mice have found that prenatal alcohol consumption significantly alters the expression of genes and the development of a part of the brain responsible for high-level thought and cognition, vision, hearing, touch, balance, motor skills, language, and emotion.  Journal of Neuroscience, November 2013
