So Much to Say

Lilah Rose talks about the zoo and gets picked as teacher's helper.

Usually, I try to wait until Lilah gets home from school to talk about her day, but already there has been so much that I don't want to end up with yards and yards of manuscript on rolled paper like Kerouac when he wrote On the Road.

I went to wake Lilah up this morning and just found the cutest sight possible.  There is a book I read her every night before bed that is called It's Time for Sleep and she knows about half of it by heart.  Now, if you are a parent and you are wondering if your child goes right to bed, the answer is probably not.  I say this because, even though I put that book back on the floor next to her bed every night, I still found her curled up with it this morning.  Between that and the mountain of friends she has to sleep with, I had to take a picture.  Sappy, I know, but I couldn't help it.

I eventually got Lilah out of bed and she promptly refused to eat her breakfast.  That has been a bit of a power struggle lately.  I want her to have a good breakfast before she goes off to school for the day and she wants to hang out with her mama, bugging her until she leaves for work.  Those two things are usually at odds with each other.  I, like today, win in the end, but it's a battle every time.

We got to school and were prepared for the day ahead on time, as usual.  When the teacher asked if there was any announcements to add, I let her know that Lilah wanted all of her friends to know there is an Arctic Adventure Weekend at the Detroit Zoo this weekend that she would be going to and that we would love to see any of them there (I say we, but I really mainly mean Lilah and my wife because I'm not super in to the Zoo.  Not much of a walker.)  People sounded very excited about it and we were also told that there is a puppet show at the DIA this weekend on Saturday and Sunday.  Moreover, we were told the kids are going to get to be taking their first field trip to see a different puppet show later in January!  All cool stuff, but not as cool as what happened next.

Lilah Rose got picked as the magic apple or teacher's helper today for the first time ever!  That meant she got to put the date on the calendar, put proper clothes on weather bear, put up the weather and day, put up the color and shape, AND wear a special pin and visor!  Man, was she happy.  She crossed her arms like she was so pleased with herself for having been picked (obviously, she had sent her psychic waves out in to the room and made her name the one that was picked.)  So excited was she that, at one point, she tripped over Mrs. Fuller's rocking chair!  When she was all done and she had taken the proper amount of time (3 minutes) to choose her visor, she beamed back at me, arms still crossed, so pleased with herself and I thought about the personality that kid has, which is a weird thing to think about.  When they come out, they have just an iota, but three years later, she brims with a personality all her own.

I was very happy, too, because she wasn't shy and she didn't make very many mistakes.  The hardest time she had was finding the right color and shape, which she has always kind of struggled with (not telling the difference, but prescribing the names.)  Also, I found it interesting that she put snowy weather up for weather bear, but I think that might have just been wishful thinking.  And, you know, it's hard to reach way up there on the calendar to put the date in the right place when you're one of the shortest people in the world, but she got it there eventually and I'm just glad I got to witness it.
