Self-Reliance in a Bathroom Stall

An adventure in the world of Lilah.

Today at preschool, my wife volunteered again while I ran some errands.  When I came to pick them up, there was one story they immediately had for me.

"Lilah isn't wearing a pull-up."  Said Allison.  "Did she have an accident?"  I asked.  No.  She had not had an accident.  What had happened was a little more adventurous.  At home, Lilah mostly takes herself to the potty because we're trying to teach her a little of the old self-reliance.  What we never covered were public stalls in bathrooms.  So, when someone went in to the girl's bathroom and tried the stall door, finding it locked with no one in it - there was a bit of confusion.  Further evidence of a pink pull up on the ground and one of the other parents asking if Lilah was wearing a pull up because she was showing a great deal of crack let to the obvious conclusions.

Instead of asking a parent or teacher for help, Lilah had excused herself to the restroom where she had gone into the stall and latched it for privacy. She had gone potty and done all the neccessary things, but then found herself to be locked in the stall.  Instead of bother someone to come help her, she had apparently crawled out under the stall as though she were trying out for a roll as an extra on Band of Brothers.  She had washed her hands and gotten back to school, though leaving the incriminating piece of pink evidence behind.

I'm all for her being self-reliant, I think it's awesome.  But we did have to sit down and talk to her about how, at school, it's best to ask for the help of a parent volunteer or the teacher.
