A Momentous Occasion

Doing the dishes, flitting about, and ornaments

Something amazing happened last night.  Granted, it won't seem that amazing to other people, but it is amazing to me.  I was doing the dishes in the evening and Lilah was just walking about when I said "Hey, pull up a stool."   She dragged the stool over and sat next to me for a few moments before she said.  "What are you doing, daddy?"  I explained to her about washing the dishes ("Like washing your hands - only for dishes.")

"Why do you have to do the dishes?"  Asked Lilah.

"If I don't do them, they won't get done, sweetheart."

This is not me being mean.  My wife grew up with a dishwasher in the house and my parents never bought one because they already had "two good ones" (me and my sister; by the time my younger brother got around to doing the dishes, they bought a dishwasher because he did them so infrequently.)

"So how do you do the dishes?"  Asked Lilah

I explained to her how you use the soapy water, then the sponge, then rinsed them with the hot water.  And then a miracle happened - she asked to help me!  I, of course, let her.  I gave her sponge duty and said to be careful of the really hot water.  I know it's silly, but just sitting there doing the dishes with her was a beautiful bonding experience and I was really bummed my wife missed out on it because she was still on her way home from work.  Okay, that's my Nerd Dad Moment done.

Today, in class, Lilah Rose made a Christmas card for her mama.  I was also informed by Mrs. Wilson that there was just so much going on that Lilah was flitting from table to table, unable to decide what she wanted to do.  Sometimes, you just want to do everything - I know how that is.  Heck, she probably inherits it from me.  They had the chance to make another ornament today, but I'm not sure if she made one or not.  They also got to wear red and bring in a picture of something red.  I cut out two red things for Lilah; a picture of Santa (who she doesn't really care for) and a picture of a Red Panda from the Detroit Zoo.  Sadly, she chose the picture of Santa to be in the collage, but oh well.  I'll just put the Red Panda up somewhere else.

As far as the other ornament goes from the last class, she did make one.  A little pinecone with colorful poms on it.  We put it on the tree today when we got home and it fits right in with her half.

That's all for now.  Only one class next week (on Tuesday), so I'm not sure whether or not I will blog on Thursday.  We'll have to see, but I'm liking being in this habit.
