Detroit country music station 99.5 WYCD hosts 13th annual radiothon in aid of kids battling serious diseases at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®
In an ideal world, 99.5 WYCD would never have to hold its Country Cares for St. Jude Kids® radiothon, an event that has raised $7 million dollars over the last 13 years. But, sadly, thousands of very sick children and their worried families flock to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis every year, from all over the country including Detroit, looking for expert care and treatment options unavailable elsewhere. Every year, millions of dollars are needed to keep funding that treatment – all provided free of charge to families - and also ground-breaking research.
“I am so incredibly proud of our loyal listeners and their huge hearts, who support us every year in raising this vital money for St. Jude,” said Tim Roberts, Program Director for 99.5 WYCD. “For all the staff at WYCD, this is an important event that touches our hearts; we know Detroit is making a big difference to many families who are facing one of the toughest times in their lives.”
This year’s radiothon will be broadcasting live from Southland Center (23000 Eureka Rd) in Taylor, Michigan, on Thursday December 12 and Friday December 13, 2013, from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Last year a total of $501,154 was raised, surpassing the previous year by $150,000. 99.5 WYCD also recently won two awards from St. Jude for its support of the charity.

St. Jude is internationally recognized for its pioneering research and treatment of children with cancer and other deadly diseases and has treated children from all 50 states and around the world. The hospital’s research has helped push overall survival rates for childhood cancer from less than 20 percent when the institution opened to almost 80 percent today. It is the first and only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center devoted solely to children, and no family ever pays St. Jude for care.
