Employee Safety is Top-of-Mind at Allied Printing Company

Employee safety is top-of-mind at Allied Printing Company. Since opening its doors in 1952, the Ferndale-based printer has been dedicated to providing a safe and secure workplace, resulting in the formation of an employee-led safety committee to engage staff in collecting safety improvement suggestions and accident reports, reporting safety issues and maintaining first aid kits in each department.

The year old safety committee recently hosted an American Red Cross emergency training and certification course. Attendees, including at least one representative from each shift at Allied’s four Ferndale facilities, were certified in basic first aid and emergency response, CPR, and AED techniques; the group also received blood-borne pathogens training.

“The emergency training and certification course is just one way the safety committee has enhanced our operations,” said Elly Chichester, vice president of administration at Allied Printing Company. “We’re grateful for the hard work and dedication of the committee members who are making Allied a better, safer place to work.”

Since its formation, the safety committee has undertaken a number of initiatives, including:  extensive hi lo training, creation of storm shelters equipped with emergency survival kits and water, and installation of improved emergency signage in each Allied facility. The projects the safety committee is currently undertaking include: the addition of evacuation signage, additional sessions with OSHA’s Consultation Education and Training (CET) Division and company-wide AED training.

“The safety committee was established to provide an opportunity for staff to share suggestions for improving the workplace,” said Carl Adkins, safety committee chair and bindery operator. “It has served as a great communication forum between employees and the leadership team to ensure safety issues are addressed with tangible results to maintain a secure and pleasant work environment for all.”
