Street Legal Customs Closes 4 Months After Moving to Ferndale

Vehicle customization company relocated from Royal Oak, but owner says it can't survive in tough economy.

Street Legal Customs, a car customization company, moved south from Royal Oak, and opened a new location in Ferndale on March 1.

But the poor economy proved to be too difficult to overcome and the business has closed, according to a letter co-owner Ben Kalish posted on the store's door earlier this month.

"As of July 17, 2011, Street Legal Customs will be closed for business," Kalish wrote in the letter. "As a valued customer, it has been our pleasure and honor to service you for the past six years."

As of Tuesday afternoon, the store was nearly empty.

"For those of you who have witnessed the economic roller coaster we have endured since we first opened our doors in Royal Oak, you know that the decision to close the business was an extremely difficult one," the letter stated. "We also wanted to take the time to extend a special thank you to the city of Ferndale, and most especially, to our landlord, who did their best to welcome us to the community with open arms and to support our efforts."
