O'Brien's and J&D Voted Best Car Repair Shops in Ferndale

In our quest to rate the best of the best in Ferndale, we asked Patch readers this week to vote for the .

A total of 27 readers voted in our poll, some wrote reviews for their favorite shops and many offered "write-in" votes for shops not included on the list.

All things considered, it turned out to be a virtual tie between in Ferndale and J&D Auto Service in Oak Park. J&J Auto and Truck Center in Ferndale, and were also popular choices.

Carolyn Christopher, secretary at O'Brien's, said the shop has been in town for 19 years and is "always busy."

"He does not advertise, it's all by word by mouth," Christopher said, referring to owner Frank O'Brien. "You treat people fairly and squarely, you get the business."

Don Hagle, one of the owners at J&D, said his sons attend school in Ferndale and he enjoys being involved in city events and organizations.

"It's a community and that's what we're about," Hagle said.

He said he welcomes his customers to call or text him anytime.

"We treat people as family, we don't treat people as a customer, that's not what we're about," he said. "Family always comes first, which means everybody's important."

• MaryAnn: As mentioned, J&D Auto Service is technically in Oak Park but, at heart, is pure Ferndale! The owners are graduates of FHS and have kids currently enrolled in Ferndale Schools. They are members of the Ferndale Area Chamber and support and/or participate in countless community and school activities. They are expert mechanics who are honest, reasonable, and thorough.
• Virginia Robinson: My whole family has been going to Butch at J&J Auto (Behind J.Kaltz) for 20+ years and we don't trust anyone else with our cars!
