Getting Crafty With Your Dollars

From after-school projects to ice cream scoops that benefit Ferndale High School's orchestra, creative deals can be found all across town.

It's art fair season and a good time to get crafty with the whole family. With some great deals and free events going on this spring, it's easy to be frugal and get creative.

On May 21, Ferndale School District children are expressing themselves during the Art Around Town Art Walk all over Ferndale. At you can view artwork and pick up a map that will guide you to the more than 15 locations that will feature creations the students' artwork as well as  hands-on store activities or promotions. Or buy a piece to benefit Ferndale Schools visual arts programs. Art will remain on display until June 3.

The Rust Belt Market is offering an introductory rate to rent space, and the has free Kids Get Messy Mondays. It's time to view the arts and get the whole family involved all across town.

1. RUST BELT MARKET
Deal: Special introductory rental rates for first four weeks of operation. Pay $75 for both Saturday (11 a.m.-7 p.m.) and Sunday (11 a.m.-7 p.m.). Normal
rate is $100 for both days. Pay $45 for Saturday or Sunday (11 a.m.-7 p.m.). Normal rate is $60 for either day.

Good Through: First four weeks of operation, which is until May 29.

2.
Deal: Kids Messy Mondays offers a chance for kids 5 and younger to come out to the Kulick Community Center Art Studio and make one craft project to take home with them. Free.

Good: 10:45-11:30 May 23.

3.
Deal: The Ferndale Public Library invites children in grades K-3 to drop-in and create something crafty with their supplies.

Good: 3:30-5 p.m. Friday.

4.
Deal: This free event offers the chance to purchase artwork from students at Roosevelt, Kennedy and Coolidge elementary schools, as well as Ferndale Middle School and High School. This art will be displayed throughout downtown Ferndale.

Good: Noon-4 p.m. May 21.

5.
Deal: The Ferndale High School Orchestra has designed two ice cream flavors, "Bittersweet Serenade" (coffee ice cream with chocolate chips, toffee, caramel and brownies) and "Ferndale Schools S'More-Chestra." Fifty cents of every scoop purchased will go to the department.
