Ferndale DIY Profile: Megan DeKok, Baker and Food Blogger

As part of our DIY series, we asked Ferndale residents five questions about what DIY means and how they put the philosophy to use.

As part of Ferndale Patch's DIY Project, we spoke with resident Megan DeKok who likes to bake and blog, and she put the two together.

I'm a redhead who loves baking and sharing it on my blog. I've lived in Ferndale a year, with my boyfriend and little dog.

2. What does DIY mean to you?

DIY means creating all the components of an end result. For me it means making all the components of a meal or dessert. Like making s'mores with homemade marshmallows and homemade graham crackers. Or maybe making flour tortillas for taco night.

3. Tell us about a DIY project (or projects) you have worked on and why it was DIY.

I have a food blog that I created a couple years ago (www.takeamegabite.com) and I'm constantly working on it. I have so much fun making different recipes and taking the photos. I love to find a recipe and really adapt it to make it my own; whether it's something I grew up eating or a crazy ice cream flavor that I just discovered. I love that I have an ongoing cookbook online, and it's fun to share it with other people who like to bake/cook.

4. Why does the DIY attitude fit Ferndale?

I think it fits Ferndale because the city is full of creative people! It's like if you're going to a dinner party in Ferndale, it's going to be done right.

5. Who is your favorite DIY artist/musician/human?

I really look up to people who bake and cook. I think of Zingermans, for sure, because when you get a sandwich from there, the bake house made the bread, and the creamery made the cheese. They've got serious food skills. Cecilia of Cecilia's Pastries is another one. She makes the best French macaroons and pastries, all done on her own. It's inspiring to a fellow dessert-lover.

This profile is part of Ferndale Patch's month-long  where we talk with residents, artists, musicians, crafters, anyone with an opinion about DIY. The project will lead up to the DIY Street Fair Sept. 16-18. If you'd like to participate, email Ferndale Patch editor Terry Parris Jr. at terry.parris@patch.com.
