Ferndale DIY Profile: Janelle Rogers, Music Publicist/Clothing Designer

As part of our DIY Project, we've asked Ferndale residents to tell us about what DIY means to them.

Janelle Rogers is the owner and head publicist of Green Light Go, a music publicity company that works with independent musicians. She has also started her own clothing design business, Envious Takeoff.

1. Tell us a little about yourself.

I’ll try just about anything once, unless it falls under the category of deep-sea fishing, seafood, and dropping more than 10 feet. I’ve been told more than once that I’m a mini Martha Stewart (minus the jail term), which could be because I love to create. This could be anything from starting my own music publicity firm, Green Light Go, to trying , to designing and sewing clothes and accessories.

2. What does DIY mean to you?

DIY goes back to what America is all about pre-factory era. It’s about craftsmanship and taking pride in what you do. It’s about the passion to create what you love and in turn share your pride and joy with the world.

3. Tell us about a DIY project (or projects) you've worked on and why it was DIY.

I come at DIY from two completely different angles. At Green Light Go Publicity, we focus on nurturing DIY artists who are looking to release their record on their own without the aid of a record label. In addition to seeking out publicity opportunities we also try to guide them on the other aspects of their career where they may not have help from a professional.

In my clothing design business, Envious Takeoff, I create everything on my own and love every aspect of it. I’m currently working on brocade jackets for the fall that are rich in color and combine a sense of whimsy with the class of Jackie O.

4. Why does the DIY attitude fit Ferndale?

Ferndale lives and breathes artists and creativity. I’ve lived here 13 years and each year I see it become more and more creative, more and more of an artist community.

5. Who is your favorite DIY artist/musician/human?

At the risk of sounding cliché, I have to say Jack White. Not only is he a musical genius, he understands how to build a business out of his music. And I dare say the White Stripes were at the forefront of the current DIY movement.
