Ferndale Code Official Orders Construction to Stop Inside New Woodward Business

Owner of new business didn't pull permits for construction but is expected to comply with inspectors, Ferndale Community and Economic Development Director Derek Delacourt said.

On Tuesday, . A jeweler is to set up shop at the corner of Woodward and Nine Mile at 22754 Woodward Ave., in the Ferndale Center Building.

The picture accompanying the story showed the construction of a divider wall inside the space.

On Wednesday, a Ferndale code official posted a bright red legal notice stating that construction work inside the building must stop.

Despite the boldness of the red notice, Ferndale Community and Economic Development Director Derek Delacourt said that it was a common mistake the business owner made.

"It's no big issue," he said. "It was a misunderstanding of the rules and the only reason we posted a sign was because we couldn't get a hold of the owner."

Delacourt said the owner hadn't pulled permits for construction and electric work; both permits cost $35. There is also an inspection fee that goes along with this type of new construction that Delacourt said was pretty nominal.

"Every city has a different way of doing permits," Delacourt said. "He just didn't know. He called and was very apologetic. I expect to see him in here tomorrow pulling permits."

That space has recently been vacant. The Downtown Development Authority confirmed that it would be a jewelry and gift shop.
