Everything Must Go at Woodward Avenue Candy Shop

Owner Janie DeJaeghere will continue to take orders for candy and baked goods while she looks for a new Ferndale location; in the meanwhile, the shop's sweets are discounted 10 to 15 percent and all fixtures will be for sale next week.

Sweets at the Woodward Avenue Candy Shop are discounted 10 to 15 percent as owner Janie DeJaeghere prepares to move to a new location in Ferndale.

DeJaeghere, who hopes to be out of candy by Wednesday, said she will temporarily work from home and will continue to take orders for sweets and baked goods. Customers will be updated on what's next via the Woodward Avenue Candy Shop page on Facebook, she said.

"I may offer deliveries (for candy and baked goods) – stay tuned to Facebook. I will be on call 24/7," DeJaeghere said. "I want to stay in Ferndale but I don't want to just jump into anything, so I'm going to take a month off.

"We were given an opportunity to get out of our lease early and the new tenant is going to use every area of the store (including the back and basement). I don't, and I feel like it's wasted space and it's a new start for me and I can spend more time with my family."

DeJaeghere declined to name the new tenant.

She said all of the shop's fixtures, including cases and barrels, will be available for purchase during an estate sale Friday and Saturday.

Karen Batchelor of Huntington Woods, who picked up goodies Friday at Woodward Avenue Candy Shop for a corporate coaching exercise, was optimistic about the DeJaeghere's move.

"I grew up in the '50s and '60s, so the candy that Janie has here is like a walk back in time for me. It's very nostalgic," Batchelor said. "I'll follow her wherever she's headed and the fact that she's going to stay in Ferndale is great news."
