Bites Nearby: Pete's Place

This quaint diner on Woodward Heights serves high quality, made-from-scratch cuisine.

Pete's Place, 1225 Woodward Heights, Ferndale, (248) 544-4215

(The Broadway Cafe) is one of those rare places that makes nearly everything on its menu well.  Open for late lunch and dinner during the week with brunch added to the weekend festivities, it is quite easy to find something on the menu that will please even the most picky eater.

For those with dietary restrictions (i.e. gluten free, vegetarian, nut allergy), the menu has clearly displayed colored boxes next to items for easy ordering.

The atmosphere is laid back and fun. Posters from Broadway shows are hung on the walls, giving playful historical twist to the decor.

With an ecclectic menu focused on made-from-scratch fare, options are plentiful.  For starters, the breaded zucchini is lightly battered and cooked just enough to be crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.  A fresh change of pace from mozzarella sticks or french fries.

For a perfectly composed pasta dish, the Pasta Mezzogeorno is a taste explosion.  Italian sweet sausage, baby spinach, roasted garlic, olive oil, parmesan cheese, and just a hint of red pepper flakes all marry perfectly.  Every so often, a fennel seed from the sausage will make it into a bite.  Add that on top of the sweet, spicy and salty already going on and you have an exciting pasta dish.

Recommended dishes: Pasta Mezzogeorno, breaded zucchini marinara, fresh grilled pineapple

Prices:  $2-$19.75

Credit cards: All major

Hours: Monday-Friday 3-10 p.m., Saturday and Sunday brunch 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., lunch and dinner 3-10 p.m.
