5 Cool Facts as B. Nektar Meadery Celebrates Its Fifth Birthday

The Ferndale business will hold a Summer Mead Fest party from 2-8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, which is national Mead Day.

B. Nektar Meadery in Ferndale marks the fifth anniversary of its opening day Friday, Aug. 2, so here are five facts in honor of the occasion.

  1. B. Nektar will celebrate its birthday with a Summer Mead Fest party from 2-8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, which is national Mead Day. The 21-and-older event at 1505 Jarvis will include a limited release of "The Zombies Take Manhattan," mead by the glass, three outdoor bars and live music. Admission is free; pours will cost $5.
  2. "Mead, perhaps the oldest fermented beverage, is made by combining honey, water, and yeast, and is often referred to as honey wine," according to the American Homebrewers Association. "Mead can range from sweet to very dry, and can be left as a traditional mead, or it can be flavored with flowers, fruits, herbs, spices, vegetables, or virtually anything you can think of adding, making a versatile array of aromas and flavors."
  3. B. Nektar was ranked No. 31 on ratebeer.com's 2013 World's Best Breweries list.
  4. The meadery was featured in the HBO television series Hung.
  5. B. Nektar "office ninja" Nick Schneider said none of the meadery's owners – Brad and Kerri Dahlhofer, Paul Zimmerman and Ian Radogost-Givens – were born in Michigan. "But, they all have moved here and it's their home now, in Detroit," he said.
