Parking Meters Take on New Life at ARTWN Fundraiser

Nearly 100 people were expected to turn out Friday night for the "Change Is Good" fundraiser for public art at The Rust Belt Market in Ferndale.

The second annual event featured former city parking meters transformed into works of art that were auctioned off, as well as the opportunity for attendees to vote for their favorite piece of the city's temporary, 10-piece outdoor ARTWN  sculpture exhibit sponsored by MotorCity Casino Hotel.

Funds raised from the evening's festivities will be used to purchase two of the ARTWN sculptures, which will become permanent installations in downtown Ferndale.

Voting will continue through the end of August at businesses that have sponsored the statues, as well as during community events, Ferndale Downtown Development Authority Communications and Marketing Manager Chris Hughes said.

The balmy first evening of summer Friday was a relief to organizers following last year's sweltering gala when temperatures hovered near the 100-degree mark, Hughes added.

Party-goers Friday enjoyed food and drinks from several Ferndale venues, music and the chance to check out The Rust Belt Market's revamped event space.
