New Library Collection is 'Love Letter' to Ferndale Community

Ferndale Public Library to launch 'Lucky Day' collection on Feb. 14.

The Ferndale Public Library is launching a new collection that library director Jessica Keyser calls a "love letter to the Ferndale community."

On Feb. 14 - Valentine’s Day - the library will officially launch its new “Lucky Day” collection.

"Lucky Day is a collection of the most popular, current, in-demand books," Keyser said in a press release. "We have filled the Lucky Day shelves with best-sellers and other books that currently have a long waiting list."

"We hope that our patrons will be surprised and delighted by their ‘luck’ in finding these titles on the shelf when they walk in the door, no waiting required," she said. "The Lucky Day collection is our love letter to the Ferndale community."

To celebrate the launch of the Lucky Day collection, each person who checks out a Lucky Day book on Feb. 14 will be entered into a raffle to win fun prizes. The library will also be giving away treats to enjoy while patrons devour their book.

Librarian Darlene Hellenberg said she's excited to reveal the Lucky Day collection to the public and thinks the collection will be a huge hit. She says that she often feels frustrated when she has to put patrons on a waiting list for a book they are excited to read.

"I'm excited to put books in people's hands instead of having to always place holds. We are living in a world of instant gratification, and when you tell someone they are going to have to wait several weeks to get what they want, they are disappointed," Hellenberg said. "I am hoping to have a lot more happy patrons because of the Lucky Day collection."

The Friends of the Ferndale Library made an $8,000 contribution to the library in December to fund the start-up of the Lucky Day collection, and to sponsor popular programs at the library.

“We are so grateful to the Friends of the Ferndale Library for their support,” Keyser said. "There are a lot of things we couldn’t do without them."

The Lucky Day books can be checked out for one week. No holds may be placed on Lucky Day books, and they cannot be renewed.

The overdue fines are 25 cents per day for Lucky Day books. Patrons can only check out one Lucky Day book at a time. The library staff hopes these rules will help to ensure that there is a quick turn-over for the Lucky Day books.
