Ferndale Library Staff Recommends: Tracy's Picks

A series featuring personal picks, insightful titles and reading recommendations from various staff members at the Ferndale Public Library. In this article, read about Librarian Tracy Wilson's top five recommendations.

Tracy Wilson is a recent graduate of Wayne State University's School of Library and Information Science and is working as a Substitute Librarian at . You can find her at the Youth Desk this summer.

Here's what Tracy has to say about being a librarian and the role of books in her life.

"I started at Ferndale Public Library as an intern in 2011. I graduated from Wayne State in December and am now working as a substitute librarian in the Youth Services department," she says. "I’m enjoying learning about new children’s books and remembering books I enjoyed as a child. I was the kid who always had her nose buried in a book, to the point where I would occasionally look up and realize the entire class had left for recess, or lunch and I hadn’t even noticed. Now I just check out more books that can ever be read in a three week period."

Here are some recommendations from Tracy!

The Shoe series of books was a mainstay of my childhood and Ballet Shoes was my favorite. It’s the story of three adopted sisters living in 1930s England. When Gum (their Great Uncle Matthew) leaves on a fossil expedition and doesn’t come back, the sisters become stage performers to earn money for their family.

Little Women

by Louisa May Alcott

FIC ALCOTT

A classic story that has stood the test of time. This is a book I reread every few years. Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy March are sisters growing up in the Northeast during the Civil War. The book follows the sisters through their joys and sorrows as they become adults.

Chester

by Mélanie Watt

JE WAT

This is a picture book I recently discovered. As a cat lover I have a tendency to pick up picture books with cats on the cover, and Chester caught my eye. Mélanie Watt attempts to write a book about a mouse, but her cat Chester has other plans and he uses his red marker to write his own story. What follows is an entertaining tug-of-war between Mélanie and Chester.

State of Wonder

by Ann Patchett

FIC PATCHETT

This is a pick for adults. This was my first Ann Patchett novel and it won’t be my last.  Patchett is a wonderful writer, who makes the Amazon jungle come to life. Marina Singh, a pharmacologist, goes to the Amazon to learn more about research being conducted by her former mentor Dr. Swenson. Making things more difficult is the fact that no one knows exactly where Dr. Swenson is, and the last person who tried to find her died while in the Amazon. This is a page-turner. I started with the book on CD and had to come back for the book, so I could keep reading.

Downton Abbey

DVD TV

Another selection for adults. I love period dramas, and this one is wonderful, with a fabulous story, setting, and costumes, as well as intrigues both upstairs with the Earl of Grantham and his family and downstairs with the servants.
