Ferndale Library Staff Recommends: Tracy's Fave Holiday Films

Need something new to screen for your own personal marathon of holiday DVDs?

Tracy Wilson is a recent graduate of Wayne State University's School of Library and Information Science. Tracy helps out as a Substitute Librarian at the Ferndale Public Library from time to time, and we're always happy to have her.

Like cookies, office parties and jingles blaring through mall-speakers soundtracking mad-dash-shoppers - the "Christmas Movie" is a tradition-onto-itself, often employed to blow off some steam with a bit of hysterical laughter, mushy romance or poignant drama.

With the holiday season upon us, I thought I would recommend my favorite Christmas movies / specials. All are available at the Ferndale Public Library.

Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas
DVD CHILDRENS - D

The animated version narrated by Boris Karloff. Based on the Dr. Seuss book by the same name, it’s a Christmas classic, and my favorite Christmas special. The Grinch, with a heart “two sizes too small,” tries to steal Christmas from the people of Whoville.

Love Actually
DVD COMEDY -L

This is my favorite Christmas movie! From 2003, this movie explores different aspects of love through ten separate stories with the stories interlinking as the movie progresses. The movie is set in London in the weeks before Christmas and has a fabulous cast including Alan Rickman, Emma Thompson, Liam Neeson, and Hugh Grant.

Scrooged
DVD COMEDY S

A retelling of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol starring Bill Murray in the Ebenezer Scrooge role. The ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future help Bill Murray’s character (Frank Cross) understand the spirit of Christmas.

A Christmas Story
DVD COMEDY C

Oddly, this movie always makes me think of summer. There was a channel that would do a “Christmas in July” special that was a 24 hour marathon of A Christmas Story. The story is told from the point of view of nine-year old Ralphie. All he wants for Christmas is a Red Ryder BB Gun.

Bad Santa
DVD COMEDY B

This is a Christmas movie for the grownups. Billy Bob Thornton plays a con man who poses as Santa to rob department stores. Things get complicated when his character befriends a troubled kid.
