We’re taking a slight deviation from course this week, as we wholeheartedly recommend that you visit your library!

According to the American Library Association, every day across the country libraries open their doors to everyone: students, parents, seniors, teachers, writers, artists, job seekers, entrepreneurs, readers, gamers, movie lovers and travel buffs. You too can celebrate the during National Library Week 2012 from April 8 to April 14!

First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation's libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support.

This year’s National Library Week motto is “You belong @ your library.” Every day, people of all ages and backgrounds from rural, suburban and urban communities turn to their libraries to find jobs or go online, to get help with homework or complex research projects, to start on a business plan, connect with their kids or simply find a space to relax.

Share your library story

For every person who loves libraries, there is a story about what the library means to them. Is the library important to you? Do you have a story to tell?  Parents, have you had a "connect with your kids" moment at the library? Did your use of the library’s computers help you find that new job? Tell us about it! Send a quick email to FPL Library Director Kate Pohjola at kpohjola@ferndalepubliclibrary.org or mail a note to the library. We want to hear your library story!

Special events during National Library Week

  • Tuesday, April 10: Today is National Library Workers Day. Take a moment to visit the FPL and thank your library staff for everything they do! Teens can stop in for the Teen Remix book club from 4-5 p.m., and we are hosting a First Time Home Buyer’s seminar from 7 to 8 p.m. in the community room, too.
  • Wednesday, April 11: Your Neighborhood Professor will discuss "The Life and Death of 1st Lt. Albert Fall Chase, 1918-1944," which tells the story of a young Army lieutenant assigned to the Philippines in the spring of 1941.
  • Thursday, April 12: Our Tween Book club will discuss “The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe” by C.S. Lewis from 6:30-7:30 p.m., and State Representative Ellen Cogen Lipton will hold a coffee hour with constituents in the library’s community room.

Be sure to stop in and visit the Ferndale Public Library, not just during National Library Week, but anytime. We’re available 24-7 on the web at http://www.ferndalepubliclibrary.org and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/FerndalePublicLibrary.
