Ferndale Library Staff Recommends: Kelly's Picks

Kelly Derin, one of our valued Page assistants, offers her list of lyrical / musical persuasions.

Kelly Derin is quite a talented singer - so it would follow that she has a refined taste in music.

It also follows that her selections for this week's round of Ferndale Library Recommendations are quite musical in nature (...even if some of it is in freeform poetry, compliments of Mr. Cummings). It's heavy on the indie-side of things, a bit underground or esoteric or...in one case...entirely Icelandic! But I second all of these.

Sigur Ros-  ( )
call number: CD – Sigur Ros

This Icelandic band experiments with dreamy, emotional peaks of sorrow and triumph led by bowed guitar, piano, violin and the lead singer's soft yet strong falsetto croons. The language spoken is Hopelandic, a specialty of the band that contains no semantic meaning. Like the lyrics, the track titles are interpretable by the Iistener- Track 1, Track 2, etc- allowing the music to speak for itself.

call number: CD – VARIOUS -   D

This is a compilation whose profits are donated to the Red Hot Organization, an international group spreading awareness about and aid for HIV and AIDS. The album features bands such as Andrew Bird, The Decemberists, Conor Oberst and Gillian Welch, Arcade Fire, Bon Iver, Feist, Iron & Wine, Beirut, Cat Power, Sufjan Stevens, Yeasayer and more. Dark Was the Night raised over $1.6 million for the cause since 2009.

Regina Spektor- Far
call number:  CD – Spektor, R

Weaving religion, society, love and isolation, Regina Spektor crafted "Far"; made of 13 short stories, rather than simple songs. Her voice techniques such as different voices, talking specific words and dolphin sounds add a spark to the music juxtaposing the melancholy of songs such as "Genius Next Door."

is 5  by  e.e. Cummings
call number: YA 811.52 C

Of the 2,900 poems he wrote during his life, e.e. cummings' "is 5" is a collection of 88 of his works, grouped into 5 sections by concepts. These often satirical pieces speak of anti-war feelings, love and more. One of my favorites is "since feeling is first," a poem about how love and one's feelings are best expressed without excessive thinking or restraint.

Amadeus- dir. Milos Forman
call number: DVD – DRAMA - M

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart cultivated such intricate, majestic classical music during the 18th century. His life and career, however, was threatened by fellow musician Antonio Salieri, who drove Mozart to a state of madness. The soundtrack is composed of Mozart's masterpieces, and this film won over 40 awards during its premier in 1984. For those who respect classical music, this is one to see.
