Ferndale Library Staff Recommends: Kate's Picks
A series featuring personal picks, insightful titles and reading recommendations from various staff members at the Ferndale Public Library. This week, read about Library Director Kate Pohjola's personal picks for late summer sounds / reads / thrills.

It's something you'll be hearing about as we roll into September. For now, we're curious about what it is that you Geek? Is it jogging? Is it DIY-crafts? Do you Geek gaming or do you Geek biking?
Whatever it is, the library supports you... (and can assuredly enhance/augment your grasp of said-naunced-geekdom with our various resources). We'll kick our Geek-Party off around the DIY Street Fair - stay tuned.

Kate's Picks
- Isles of Wonder: Music for the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games - I'm enjoying this partially because members from one of my favorite bands, Underworld, were the musical directors of the opening ceremony, and mostly because it's utterly fantastic. The two-disc set includes remixed Underworld tracks, amazing drumming from Evelyn Glennie, and familiar European pop music from the Pet Shop Boys and David Bowie.
- Very much looking forward to this weekend's release of the latest in the Bourne saga, The Bourne Legacy. I absolutely love action and suspense/thrillers, and it stars the amazing Edward Norton, and one of my newest favorites, Jeremy Renner. I keep discovering him as a bit player in older films, and he just gets better and better. (Trailer)
- I am working my way through the DVDs of the older seasons of the tv comedy, The Big Bang Theory. Multiple people were telling me about this how, and I kept resisting it until I caught myself captivated by Sheldon Cooper while watching a current episode on the in-store television at Game Stop. These guys aren't afraid to get their geek on! Bazinga!
- Reading-wise, I can't seem to get enough of memoirs and autobiographies. First it was Kelle Hampton's Bloom, then Tina Fey's Bossypants, and I just finished Rachel Dratch's A girl walks into a bar.
- Next on my list? Madonna & me : women writers on the queen of pop. This a collection of essays edited by Laura Barcella which includes a chapter by Michigan native (and my cousin) Wendy Shanker. I'm super excited to be able to attend a reading from this collection at the Barnes & Noble in West Bloomfield on Thursday, August 16!
