Ferndale Library Staff Recommends: Geek Picks (Geek The Library this Saturday)

Another round of personal picks presented for your consideration of recreational/enlightening engagement by the staff at the Ferndale Library. This week, we "Geek Out!"

You know, sometimes it can be hard drawing a large-enough audience for a library program. I don't know what it is...

Still, though, our enthusiasm sustains, undeterred, and we - your humble, dedicated staff - shall maintain revolving a monthly schedule of provocative/insightful events.

But folks, this time, this time it's different - this time I need the WHOLE COMMUNITY to come out and tell us...just one thing we wanna know from you, one question:

Find out what's happening in Ferndalewith free, real-time updates from Patch.

What do you Geek?

Saturday is the culmination of our Geek The Library campaign; a community-awareness campaign underlining the vital role that public libraries play in the enrichment and strengthening of a community through the various the services and materials (and programming) that they offer.

Whatever you geek the Ferndale Library supports you!

Here's some newly released items that cater to various personal Geek penchants (be they hobbies, interests, or other curiosity).

(And stop by the Library on Saturday, Sept. 15, between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. -amid the magnificience of the , and get some Geek-Swag, personalize your geekdom with an expressive button or press-on tattoo, pose for a Geek photo. And please, tell us what you GEEK!?!)

Geek DIY - with The World of Geekcraft: ...jewelry, furniture accents, buttons, cross-stitch and even terrariums get the geeky-treatment, embossed with outre/nostalgic images like Super Mario or Dungeons & Dragons. (It gets worse...and by worse, I mean: awesome!)

Geek Biographies - with the newest on Bob Dylan - Who Is That Man? Rolling Stone editor David Dalton take on the inherently kaleidoscopically-told and re-told life of the 71-year-old folk/Americana/tall-tale-twisting/blues-muddling/electric-poet. Why not read-up on him amid all the hubbub and critical ballyhoo over his recently released album, (his 35th!) Tempest.

Geek Politics in our non-fiction section with Predator Nation -writer/director Charles Ferguson's Inside Job won the 2010 Academy Award for Best Documentary -and this book continues his investigation into the systemic corruption and corroding greed that lead to the 2008 financial crisis... Rivieting...and riling.

Geek Art Books -with our Art Display, an array of titles, exploring different eras, philosophies, techniques, mediums and artists' life-and-work, a batch of books bolstered by our recent award of the James C. Dance Grant (and generous patron donations).

Geek Local Culture -with our Locally Grown Display, again-an array of titles spanning music, art, fiction, biographies or even loosely-inspired popular/contemporary films that were based here in Michigan. Everything local! A perfect way to prime yourself for the DIY Street Fair. (We'll soon be featuring the newest album by Detroit/Ypsi indie-pop sensations Lightning Love -their 2nd LP, The Blonde Album. They play during DIY weekend on Saturday around 6:30 p.m.)

But again - remember to GEEK THE LIBRARY - anytime on Saturday (Sept. 15) between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Thanks for reading...thanks for your support.
