What's New at the 2012 Woodward Dream Cruise

Ferndale

Two unique attractions are featured for the first time this year as part of : Cars in Art and Restoration Academy, both taking place on Nine Mile Road. Cars in Art will feature local tattoo artists painting automotive murals on the body of cargo vans. Restoration Academy is a team of Metro Detroit students and retired automotive engineers who will build a classic car on location. .

Berkley

You won't have to dig through your bags for cash to buy a T-shirt this year in Berkley. Shoppers looking to snap up Woodward Dream Cruise merchandise , a change that organizers hope will boost sales. Items for sale include T-shirts, magnets, lapel pins, dashboard plaques, travel mugs, die-cast cars and hats.

Also new this year in Berkley is a sponsorship from DTE, which held on Friday to help fund Public Safety and Public Works overtime, as well as barrels and barricades.

Royal Oak

Who says the Dream Cruise is all about cars? A new event this year, the , will be held on southbound Woodward between Normandy and 13 Mile Road from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Saturday. The run/walk event was added to give the Dream Cruise another family-friendly activity, said Greg Rassel, the president of the Woodward Dream Cruise board.

Birmingham

The . Chevrolet is returning to the city this year, setting up a display that will include new features such as a life-size Corvette timeline, including milestone Corvettes and engines from the brand's 60-year history, and a Detroit graffiti artist who will be painting a large Corvette-inspired mural throughout the day. Ford Motor Co. also will make a statement during the Birmingham Cruise, with WCSX FM-94.7 displaying a completed Stone Soup Boss 5.0 Mustang from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Bloomfield Township

A new event this year in Bloomfield Township is the Dream Drive, held from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Comerica Bank. For $15, participants can take a 15-minute ride in one of the Superformance Cobra vehicles to help support the Bloomfield Hills Optimist Club, Bloomfield Township Fire Department Charities and Bloomfield Township Police Department Benevolent Fund. The price includes a picture of the rider e-mailed at the conclusion of the event. Order forms are available on the Bloomfield Township website.
