Pies in the Face Raise $600 to Beautify Ferndale
Clean the Ferndale Up organizer Matthew Nowaczok and City Councilman Dan Martin submitted to pies in the face Saturday as a fundraiser for the community cleanup event.

It's not the word most people would use to describe taking a pie in the face. But, Clean the Ferndale Up organizer Matthew Nowaczok isn't most people.

The Ferndale Community Foundation board member and City Councilman Dan Martin each took a pie in the face, from City Councilwoman Melanie Piana and Mayor Dave Coulter respectively, Saturday morning before a crowd of onlookers outside City Hall.
The opportunity to toss the pies was the raffle prize that residents who donated $20 or more toward Clean the Ferndale Up hoped to win.

"The winner of the raffle was notified but wasn't there," said Nowaczok, who added approximately $600 was raised. "That said, the people gave good money to get me and Dan pied. So we ad-libbed."
How did it feel to take a pie in the face on a chilly Saturday morning?
"Refreshing," Nowaczok said. "I did accidentally inhale pie."
