Book, Schedule Announced for Annual 'Ferndale Reads' Month

Kick-off event will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Rust Belt Market.

The Ferndale Public Library has announced the book they’ll be encouraging everyone in Ferndale to read this March. Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut is this year’s Ferndale Reads book.

As in years past, those who are interested in reading the book can come to the library beginning Feb. 9, or any of the Ferndale Reads events, and get a free copy of the book to keep.

This year’s kick-off event will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9 at the Rust Belt Market. The details of the kick-off are a mystery, but attendees may want to bring their smart phones to document the happening.

Copies of the book will be handed out at the kick-off event.

Throughout the month of March, there will be many ways to earn entries in a prize drawing, including: being “caught” reading Slaughterhouse-Five around Ferndale, attending a book club discussing the book, attending another Ferndale Reads event and a few others that will be announced along the way.

This year’s keynote speech will feature Ferndale resident and author Gregory Sumner, who is a professor at the University of Detroit. His recent publication, Unstuck in Time, is a journey through Kurt Vonnegut’s life and work. Sumner will speak about Slaughterhouse-five’s popularity and sign copies of his book.

The FESC is an important steward of the City’s environmental values and goals, and its membersRead More have performed valuable education programming and environmental policy support on behalf of all Ferndale residents. It was clear, however, the FESC and the city needed to revisit the mission and vision to make sure the group was focused on activities that could make the greatest impact. I worked with the FESC to brainstorm a new mission and purpose ideas with members and helped rewrite the draft ordinance in a collaborative effort with FESC and city staff. I'm happy to say we've made steady progress; last night the city manager and I met with FESC members to review the new ordinance language, and the group's renewel request will come to council on June 24th. Together, we had a great meeting and I believe FESC members are excited about the clearer alignment between FESC interests and the City’s environmental goals. Yes, it did take a bit longer than anticipated, but in the end I believe we'll have a stronger direction for FESC for years to come.

Here is a great idea: Let's not have the city automatically water its lawns after two days of rain.Read More That would save water, reduce costs, and not contribute to increased storm water runoff.
