Author of Book on Slaughter Industry to Speak in Ferndale

Timothy Pachirat, who wrote "Every Twelve Seconds: Industrialized Slaughter and the Politics of Sight," will lead a discussion about what he calls society's blind eye to practices at slaughterhouses.

A news release:

The Michigan Humane Society and the Animals and Society Institute will welcome Dr. Timothy Pachirat, assistant professor in the Department of Politics at The New School for Social Research, to the Kulick Community Center in Ferndale at 7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 21m as he presents “Every Twelve Seconds: Industrialized Slaughter and the Politics of Sight,” a discussion about the slaughter industry and how society actively turns a blind eye to what goes on behind closed doors at these facilities.

In his presentation, Pachirat talks about the routine killing of animals for human consumption from the perspective of those who take part in it. Having spent more than five months undercover employed as a liver hanger, cattle driver, and quality control worker for Great Plains slaughterhouse, Pachirat explores not only the slaughter industry but also how society facilitates violent labor as it hides away that which is found too repugnant to contemplate.
