Great Lakes Cyber Academy Community Celebrates Rapid Growth of New Virtual High School

Students, staff and supporters of Great Lakes Cyber Academy, a tuition-free statewide online public charter school that is redefining high school for 21st Century learners, recently held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate the rapid growth of the new virtual high school. The school, which opened in September, has seen an impressive enrollment of nearly 400 students after only one semester and growth is expected to continue.

“As the education model continues to expand with new options, it is essential for us as a new virtual school to build our community and show our appreciation for those who have supported us,” said Heather Ballien, principal.

Students and staff of Great Lakes Cyber Academy were joined by Michigan Senator Patrick Colbeck, Cindy Schumacher, executive director of the Governor John Engler Center for Charter Schools (CMU) and the school board for the celebration, which included a proclamation from Governor Rick Snyder.

Students statewide were invited to attend the ceremony virtually through the school’s LiveLesson® system—interactive, real-time technology that allows teachers to conduct lessons online. As a special treat for the students, as well as those on hand for the ceremony, Senator Colbeck and Ms. Schumacher led the LiveLesson® on-site at Great Lakes Cyber Academy’s Okemos office.

Great Lakes Cyber Academy is open to students in grades 9-12 seeking a fully-online, technology-enhanced public school experience offering unmatched flexibility, an award-winning curriculum, and Michigan-certified teachers.

The school’s customized approach to education allows teachers to tailor instructions to the individual needs and learning styles of each student. In addition, the school provides three flexible graduation pacing options throughout the full year (versus solely a traditional 10-month school calendar); Standard Pace, Extended Pace and Accelerated Pace.

Enrollment for the 2014-2015 year is underway and interested students and families are encouraged to attend one of the upcoming informational events hosted by the school. For more information, visit www.GreatLakesCyberAcademy.com or call 855-464-4522.
