Ferndale Teacher Loses Bid to Be Troy Mayor

Scott Welborn, a Troy resident, was one of six candidates running for one partial term as mayor in the Tuesday, May 7, special election.

Ferndale High School social studies teacher Scott Welborn was defeated Tuesday in his bid to be the next mayor Troy. Troy Patch reported that with 19 of 19 precincts reporting unofficial results Tuesday night, Dane Slater won the race. The vote tally was as follows, according to Troy Patch. Welborn, who began teaching in 1993 and joined Ferndale High School in 2001, told the League of Women Voters Troy Area in April that his education experience could help him unify a city as diverse as Troy. "I teach in a very diverse school at Ferndale High School," the married Troy father of two said. "I know what it’s like to be poor. I’ve seen a destitute situation and realized that education was a good way to get out of that situation."

Ferndale Mayor Dave Coulter Announces Re-Election Bid

"I'm very optimistic about our future, and there's a lot of things I want to continue working on," he says Tuesday.

Ferndale Mayor Dave Coulter announced Tuesday on Facebook that he plans to seek re-election in November. Coulter was appointed mayor in January 2011 after former mayor Craig Covey was elected to represent the 25th District on the Oakland County Commission, a seat  Coulter had held. Coulter won the November mayoral election that year with nearly 85 percent of the vote. Readers on the Ferndale Patch Facebook page expressed enthusiasm about Coulter's re-election bid Tuesday. "I'm very optimistic about our future, and there's a lot of things I want to continue working on," Coulter said Tuesday. "Our parks need upgrades, Livernois needs attention, and there's more to do to attract businesses and job. And of course the budget isn't getting any …

L. Brooks Patterson Looks Ahead: 'The County is Changing'

The Oakland County executive proved he's a stand-up guy during an Election Night appearance in Royal Oak.

As Democrats celebrated election victories Tuesday in Michigan and across the country, the mood at the Emagine Royal Oak theater complex, where more than 200 Oakland County Republicans gathered, was a mixed bag. That is, until L. Brooks Patterson, 73, changed the energy of room.  “He gave some remarks and then he told us he had a surprise for us – and then he stood up on his own,” said former Royal Oak Mayor Dennis Cowan. “Everyone burst into applause.”  Patterson, elected to his sixth term as Oakland County Executive on Nov. 6, was injured in a crash in August that left him hospitalized at McLaren Oakland Hospital in Pontiac for five weeks after suffering almost a dozen broken bones. He returned to work in October using a wheelchair and …

Oakland County Commissioner Helaine Zack Focuses on Working Across the Aisle, Economic Development

The Democrat from Huntington Woods was elected Tuesday to represent the new 18th District.

Helaine Zack, who secured another term Tuesday on the Oakland County Board of Commissioners, is undaunted by serving as a member of the minority party. Zack, D-Huntington Woods, beat Steven Zimberg, R-Huntington Woods, to represent the new 18th District. She defeated Craig Covey of Ferndale in the August primary. Covey and Zack currently serve on the commission but, due to redistricting, were in competition to represent the 18th district, which includes Huntington Woods, Hazel Park, Oak Park, Royal Oak Township and Ferndale. "It's been a long election period for me because of the redistricting," Zack said Wednesday. She has served on the Finance and Human Resources Committees as a representative of the 22nd District, which includes …

Ferndale City Clerk Working to Improve Precinct Efficiency

City Clerk Cherilynn Tallman says she will ask council, city management for re-evaluation of consolidated voting precincts.

While residents were digesting election results on Wednesday, Ferndale City Clerk Cherilynn Tallman and her staff were already at work evaluating ways to make the voting process more efficient next time. On Tuesday, residents reported varying wait times at the polls with voters at certain locations including University High School waiting more than two hours even during non-peak times. "I hate that voters had to wait so long. I know that it was a tremendous hardship for a lot of people," Tallman said Wednesday. "I feel for those who simply couldn't wait, so we're going to do our part to make it easier for our residents to exercise their right to vote next time." Election Day turnout in Ferndale was just under 64 percent this year - almost …

I am appreciative of election workers, especially the seniors citizens who are the majority doing the job. While there is always room for improvement, the long lines were due to a ballot heavy on state and local proposals plus many undecided voters who were not prepared on how to cast their votes. Therefore, having ten or twenty voter privacy boxes does not guarantee a faster outcome as one might…   more ›

From what I've gathered from the parents I speak to, a lot of them were never fond of Meier and see him as being rather self-serving. I don't know Meier all that well, so I can't really speak to that, but I really wouldn't be surprised if your assessment was right- I'm sure he probably did anger quite a few people. That said, the people running for school board more or less seem to have decent …   more ›

The unions were not entirely blameless. However, to say "the unions killed Hostess" and then somehow blaming that on Obama and/or Obamacare is disingenuous. You did not address how management squandered the millions of investment dollars and union concessions, you did not address the 6 CEOs since 2004 or the pillaging of millions of dollars for raises and golden parachutes for the upper …   more ›
