About this column:

A week's recap of all the news.
Another week has passed at Ferndale Patch and just as the weeks prior, it was packed with news. Don't believe me? Well, then, read on. Water and sewerage rates expected to go out As we reported last Monday, water and sewerage rates are expected to go up. Ferndale is the fourth longest customer of the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department. The city purchases about $700,000 of water from Detroit. Ferndale Patch is looking into the water bill question and how it all fits together. If you'd like to tell us about your bill, go here and send us an e-mail. Ferndale Area Chamber turns 75 The Ferndale…
It was a big week last week for Ferndale. A lot went down. We have an interim city manager, three candidates for mayor, updates on the library, a few business closures reported and a whole lotta tax talk. Letter to the Editor: Temporary tax increase best for Ferndale's short-term future Councilman Scott Galloway wrote to Ferndale Patch explaining why the recommended Headlee Override is best for Ferndale's short-term financial future. "Is it worth approximately 40 cents more a day, compared to what you are paying now, to preserve these services? For me the answer is a resounding yes," he wrote…
Last week was spent getting back into the swing of things. Leaving behind holiday vacation, the holidays in general, kids back to school, full work schedule on the calendar. I don't know about you, but I'm also still trying to adjust to these early sunsets. Last week also brought some Ferndale news hits and here they are: Everybody is in love with Valentine Vodka It wasn't hard news but it was one of our most popular stories to date. Basically, Ferndale will be getting a pretty sweet martini bar called Valentine Vodka Martini Bar. It's a micro distillery, too, making its own vodka right in …
Though the New Year is always big news, a few other things happened in Ferndale last week, too. If you missed it, here's a recap. 'Old and Cold' Water Main Break An "old and cold" water main broke on Central, just sound of Nine Mile Road. Ferndale Department of Public Works Water Systems Supervisor Dan Harper said Ferndale water services weren't affected during the break. It was fixed later that night. Mayor Craig Covey Serenaded at Last Council Meeting Mayor Craig Covey's last City Council meeting was last Tuesday. He's moving on to an Oakland County Commissioners' seat, which he won in …
The holidays pretty much commandeered most of our coverage last week. We had movie lists and shopping guides and twinkle light photo essays. Of course, other stuff happened, and we were there. So, in case you missed it because of the mad dash to Dec. 25, here's a little recap. Ferndale Marching Band, Running Back Honored by School Board The Ferndale School Board recognized the outstanding performances of Ferndale High School's Marching Band and Ferndale varsity boys running back Anthony Garland-Shepherd. Ferndale's 122-member marching band, led by Director Elon Jamison, won its sixth …
Ferndale Patch put another week in the books. If you missed it, for whatever reason, here's a recap. Man In Sunglasses Robs Citgo There wasn't much information to this report except a man described as a male, 40-45 years old, approximately 6 feet 3 inches tall robbed the Citgo gas station on Nine Mile Road wearing a light brown mid-length coat, black hat, black pants and black sunglasses. It happened last Sunday at about 10:45 a.m. No one was hurt. Ferndale Police are still looking for suspects. Next Year's Deficit Not As Bad Ferndale City Manager Bob Bruner gave a presentation last Monday …
A lot has changed since last Monday. Namely, the four inches of snow on the ground, the bitter cold and the fact that Ferndale needs to start looking for another city manager soon. But, other stuff happened, too. Here's your weekly breakdown of a week full of news, as well as an ever-handy list of stuff to do: School Board Elections Moved It was a controversial move, but it happened anyway by a vote of 4-3. The Ferndale School Board moved its elections from a special election in May to an even-year election in November. On top of that, the board also approved an increase in terms from four …
Another Monday is here, and another column to let you know what you missed last week -- if you weren't paying attention to Ferndale Patch. A $15K Reward Last week was the announcement of a $15,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the shooter of Karim Khamarko, owner of the Dollar Club Plus. Khamarko was shot twice and killed Friday, Nov. 26, in what looks like a robbery gone wrong, according to Ferndale Police Detective Lt. William Wilson. The Khamarko family held a press conference on Tuesday pleading with the public to offer up any information they may have. …
