About this column:

These photos are of one Ferndalian's weekend. Sometimes in Ferndale, sometimes not. If Seinfeld was about nothing, then this is about nothing... and everything.
You know what they say about Ferndale in the springtime. All kinds of things! My personal favorite happenings have been the opening of the Rust Belt Market and the Valentine Vodka Martini Bar and the switch in color in the trees, sky and flowers from grey to everything but grey. The next cool thing to talk about is the Oakland, coming to West Nine Mile soon. In this little slide show full of Ferndale, someone turned 30 at the Emory. I know that only because there was big balloon with 30 on it. And... I recently found out that Ferndale residents could check out movies for FREE from the library…
Winter was winning, but not anymore. Ferndale keeps buzzing along. Lately I've been going to Java Hutt, getting a green tea chai latte and working on my laptop. It's good people watching, and so was the Metro Times Blowout in Hamtramck a few weekends ago. I bought the weekend pass, went two days out of three. A highlight was Ferndale area band Macramé Tiger, a good band to see live.  And I even spotted a Valentine Vodka poster at another venue. On the Blowout shuttle bus was the usual riffraff, but it makes for good stories. On Fat Tuesday, I bought a dozen packzi from Apple Fritter in …
December brought snow and ice and the holidays to Ferndale. The snow looks nice but the ice had its pros and cons. An icy sidewalk I would vote no to, but the Holiday Ice festival gets a yes. With the holidays also comes shopping, seeing old friends at the craft fair at AJ's Cafe and a lot of red stuff. Throw in a breakfast burrito at the Fly Trap and New Year's Eve at the Emory, and December wasn't too shabby.   Peace out 2010! Music provided by Ferndale's Ryan Allen & His Extra Arms.
Before the snow hit I went on a jaunt in Ferndale. This time in search of breakfast. Club Bart won. It was delicious, and somehow the coffee never got cold. This town is spoiled with breakfast options. Think about it: Club Bart, The Fly Trap, Toast, Omega, Hilton Road Cafe, Hambo, and many, many more. There are always great moments here to take pictures. Better than driving any day. I took two trips outside of Ferndale. The first was to the Somerset mall, for holiday shopping. Busy over there. The second was a spur of the moment trip to the Detroit Conservatory on Belle Isle.  Highly …
Looking at my coaster made of letters inspired me to go look for more letters. So I took to the streets of Ferndale and ended up downtown. Along the way, I found a flower still in bloom in November, colorful store displays and the smell of soy wax candles at the Candle Wick Shoppe. I included the candle odor to download. Just kidding.  But what topped it all was running into a friend on the street. As I was looking at everyone's shoes, he informed me that the city is pushing to allow hybrid vehicles a discount on street parking. Also I want to try the new Michigo Pizza place. I'm just not …
Editors note: A friend gave me a camera over the summer and told me to take a bunch of photos. It was a 35mm, see-through-orange-plastic thing that you get at the dollar store. It actually took me a second to figure it out. It came with a funny little booklet that gave you instructions on how to turn it on, roll the film and snap the picture. I took the camera and over the next few days shot random things that I encountered. I gave it back to her, she developed the film and showed me the photos. What was interesting was that it really captured not only my day, but my personality and the …
