Report: Student Charged in Armed Assault at Ferndale Digital Learning Center

Police said a 17-year-old student attacked another student who is a member of a rival gang, according to an article in the Daily Tribune.

A student at Ferndale's Digital Learning Center was charged Friday with felony assault after a gang-related fight at the school, according to the Daily Tribune.

The 17-year-old student reportedly attacked another student who is a member of a rival gang at about 1 p.m. Thursday near the entrance doors to the school gymnasium, the newspaper reports.

The student, who was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and is jailed on a $25,000 bond, may have been armed with a knife or half of a pair of scissors at the time of the assault, according to the article.

The alternative high school, which opened this year, is located at 427 Allen.

Last week, six students were arrested at the Digital Learning Center after a fight outside the school.

Patch, is this a new incident or an update on the 10/25 story?

Hmm, it says Thursday, so I assume it was a separate incident.

If that's the case, then I'm wondering why we're inviting these "students" into our neighborhoods. For what other purpose are Ferndale voters willing to invite criminals into our neighborhoods but to balance our school budget? For what other reasons would we lay such a burden on our neighbors that live near these facilities but to fund a school district with fewer than 2000 of its own students and the highest paid superintendent in the county and 2nd lowest-paid teachers?

Fed Up with Ferndale Schools

Sometimes there's not enough money in the world to make things worthwhile. I think this is one of those cases. I'd much rather see our district suffer financially a bit than keep this school open. I am furious with the administration of Ferndale Public School for knowingly allowing gang members into our community. I have been told by two teachers (although I believe they call them caseworkers) that there are a number of students at the school wearing ankle tethers. Why are we inviting this element into our community? Shut the school down NOW.

I cannot agree more with you and Tom. I feel terrible for the people living around that school.

I suspect both schools would have closed already, or be much different, if adult resided at Roosevelt, at the border of Pleasant Ridge and Ferndale, than closer to Eight Mile. Or perhaps if the district's administrative offices were in either school rather than Harding.

As long as the costs of their financial plan are born by residents other than their immediate neighbors, I suspect no changes will occur.

Then again, maybe the stories we read and hear about really aren't that worrisome, and the residents are comfortable or feel even safer with those schools nearby than without them, and perhaps their property values are stabilized or even buoyed by them, because they don't protest nearly as much as I expect them to, or would myself if they were near my home.

I tend to think they don't protest because they feel nothing will ever change with the current Board and Superintendent. That's the feel I've gotten, anyways.

sell Taft and Wilson, both are surplus.
Harding should never have been built.
we are suffering for past mistakes of school boards.

It was clear from the moment that they remodeled Harding that they had every intention of converting it into offices for the administration. No doubt Harding needed the renovations, but it seems like a total waste of money to just use them as administrative offices. As I recall, Harding at one point housed Alternative Education. Is it possible that was canned because the admins didn't want to be near the Alt. Ed students? If that's the case, they should probably empathize more with the residents.

@Ferndale Resident
Harding should have been sold and demolished, like Hazel Park did with Clark Elementary.
Ferndale School Board has always been run by bleeding heart liberals who can't make the tough decisions. That's why we're in a bad position with 3 surplus buildings. (Taft, Wilson, Harding).

As a Moderate, I disagree that it comes down to a Liberal/Conservative school board. In this case, I just feel that the board was dead-set on having new offices at Harding come hell or high water.

Undesirable projects are always dumped on the east and south sides of the City. It's always been like that.

It's unfortunate when we have this happen in our schools, any of our schools. I can tell you that a majority of the students that are participating in the Digital Learning Center are there because they want to be there. They want a degree and a better life. And I can tell you that our Academic Case Managers are truly excited by the opportunity to create a 'New' high school. Our FEA president has stated this more than once at district meetings!
How do I know this? I visited the school recently. I visited several classrooms with students either sitting alone working on their current project or in groups feeding off of each other to do the same. ACM's were there to guide and support these activities. I met a student that, when he leaves the school he goes to a very different kind of life than your child would. Yet he constantly submits his assignments, sometimes at 2 or 3 AM; keeps in touch with his ACM and is rapidly progressing. For most students, this is a safe, comforting environment and the only place they are given respect. Our school leadership treats them like your child's teacher treats him/her. And they get that respect back.
Anyone interested in seeing what the inside of this school is like, call for a visit.

Keith, fair enough. But what does the board intend to do about the crime? The board requires background checks of its staff, how about its adult students?

And you didn't address the big question--how much will the district ask residents to bare? If it filled with great students, would you bring them to Roosevelt or Harding, or move administration to the DLC?

I'm sure there's more heart-warming stories like the one you told above, but that ignores (or distracts) from the problem and the apparent fact the district seems uninterested in addressing it.

Responses like the one above suggest board members are deaf to resident concerns and resident safety.

Of course, your response also reminded me of Charles Durning singing "Dance a Little Side-step."

I can't believe what I'm reading. You have the power to weigh the hearts of the majority of the students there? Impressive. You visited the school? Bravo! Now come sit on my porch and get screamed at and threatened by dlc students speeding down my street on the wrong side of the road. See the litter thrown everywhere. Watch the cop cars block my driveway twice a week (which they are welcome to do, God bless them, but they shouldn't have to). You propose no solutions, just rhapsodies about all the sweet kids there while my neighborhood sinks into gang violence to line the district's pockets.

This is a perfect example of why people are fed up with the current board. Instead of addressing this very troubling issue as to why you are allowing gang members into our community and schools, you proclaim that everything is fine because YOU visited the school one time. I personally know two people that work there and they will tell you that it is anything BUT fine. There are students there that are wearing tethers, there are gang members, there are NUMEROUS students that have no interest in learning and are only there because they are being forced to go.

Until FPS does a better job of screening the students and keeping out the thugs, gang members, etc., then the school needs to be shut down and, unfortunately, the students that YOU claim are there because they really want to learn (even though nobody else has been able to figure out who those students are) will have to go elsewhere. The board and the administration made this mess and need to fix it NOW. No longer will we sit still for your ridiculous claims that this school is benefiting our district in any way but financially. Close it down immediately.

Don't forget Jefferson school. What do you think administrators or instructors are going to tell the superintendent and his staff. If the people running these halfway house step out of line they will lose their job. Close Wilson, Harding, Jefferson and taft

@Mr. Warnick,
I HAVE visited the facility. I have seen the classrooms. I have talked to a student that attended the school. The portrayal of this "school" is polar opposite of the one that I saw. Just curious as to where how you got those rose colored glasses that you are apparently wearing. I live in this neighborhood. I see the complete lack of respect that these youths give to our area, and to the opportunity that has been given to them. Plain and simple, this is a money grab by our district that needs to be halted IMMEDIATELY. This building should be permanently shuttered, and the property sold, Use the northern area of property for new housing, and the southern portion for commercial use. The newly created tax base should cover whatever we might lose by closing this "school". If you are so insistant on having a "Digital Learning Center", perhaps the school district can convert whichever school that YOU live by into one. At that point, I would be very interested to see how supportive you are of this type of institution.

I'm sorry, but if you have a Board of Education member asking you how you feel about the school, are you -really- going to say that you dislike it?

When the school board members go on their retreats is this a violation of the Open Meetings Act?
Why isn't there an accounting of what these schools/students cost us local taxpayers? The schools refuse to submit the information under FOIA.
How much time and revenue are spent defending the District and the low test scores (University High).
The superintendent said if we closed these schools he would have to lay off staff. DAH. The staff will not complain or comment negatively because they would lose their job.
School board: Stop using Ferndale taxpayers to fund your social programs to make you feel good. Superintendents: quit lining your corrupt pockets at the expenses of the local taxpayers. Stop being untruthful for the need of the mileage renewal and increases .

Tired, corruption is a heavy accusation. Our board members may be many things, but I don't believe any are corrupt.

Ferndale Public Schools have become an annex for the failed Detroit Public School District, run at Ferndale taxpayer expense.
