UPDATE: Crews Work to Restore Power to Thousands in Ferndale

Saturday night's storm causes widespread outages and flooding; more than 6,000 DTE customers in the dark.

A severe storm that swept through Ferndale on Saturday night left thousands without power and damage throughout many neighborhoods.

As of Sunday morning, DTE Energy reported 6,398 customers without power. The DTE Outage Map showed a variation in restoration dates among certain areas. Customers are expected to regain electricity between Sunday and Wednesday, the map shows.

The storm left downed trees and tree limbs in some neighborhoods, and there was flooding along the west side of Woodward and Allen Street in the aftermath. Residents also reported downed power lines.

DTE Energy spokesman Scott Simons said crews are out working to restore power but residents may not see results until Sunday.

"It's hard to say because the storm is still blowing through our service area," Simons said at about 10 p.m. Saturday. "We won't have any restoration estimates until Sunday morning."

If you spot a loose power line, call DTE Energy at 800-477-4747.

If you have photos of storm damage, send them to Kristen Skladd at kskladd17@hotmail.com.

I just had a friend say "I was thinking of moving to Ferndale, but not if my power is going to go out all the time". The storms were really bad, but why is it always West of Woodward?

Actually, we've had quite a few outages east of Woodward since I moved here 11 years ago. This was storm related but DTE does need to update their equipment, etc., in this area.

I have to agree with Kim Dz. The Southeast corner of between Woodward and Hilton lost the power on and off for about 20 minutes but then came back on and stayed on. But DTE needs to upgrade the infrastructure in the city to handle issues beyond the storms that come through the area that all of Michigan is up against. God forbid the power went out during the winter. What is DTE going to tell its customers then? And finally were is our credits that are due to the Ferndale residents for the past summer outage that was due to DTE negligence? I haven't seen mine come on my bill yet!

Have lived in Ferndale twice, as well as 3 other states. The outages this year are the worst of anywhere I have ever lived, that includes Alaska with earthquakes.

Can somone tell me why our City Government or the City Attorney has not filed suit against DTE for the pure greed and negligence in the recent power outages to the city? What to big a company to go up against that they just let them get away with the s*** they put us through this past summer? Gutless is what I call it!

Very interesting question. DTE was at the first city council meeting after the last series of outages and was grilled thoroughly by council and residents AND had no answers. Come to think of it, there's been no follow-up report to Council and residents and I attend every meeting possible. I hope someone on Council / staff is reading this thread in time for the Sept. 12 council meeting.

I certainly hope the repair estimate of 9:30 tomorrow night is DTE's worst case. After last month's outage, I would have thought Ferndale would have some priority on the DTE list. Apparently not. Maybe we should just have DTE be a standing agenda item at council?

Just so you know, "9:30 tomorrow" is a standard answer that DTE Energy gives everyone, even when they have no idea when they'll be able to restore power, even if they believe they won't be able to restore it for days. When you call, if they don't know ... the answer will be "9:30 tomorrow." Ask each and every person who called during the days of the outage last time. They will tell you. They were told the exact ... same ... thing.

To me, an answer which is known to be untrue but is given anyway just to keep you from bothering them is a lie. That means that not only is DTE Energy a negligent company. But that they are a company filled with liars working for them.

Huh. Well, that doesn't make me happy. BTW, I just saw a DTE truck drive down my street. Then, it went the other way. This does not bode well!

I agree with Mark. We kept getting false hope during the last outage with the automated message "between 9:30 and 11:30pm". Now you call and get the same message. It doesn't instill confidence to know that estimate is most likely a lie. One of my clients this morning said "DTE should just schedule a time during every council meeting to come apologize". As funny as the comment was, it's also be becoming very sadly true.

Now that I hear that restoration might not be till Wednesday...I think I was only being partially snarky. Now I think they should set up a satellite office at the Kulick Center.

Good call on the fridge. I forgot to unplug that.

Have seen no DTE trucks yet today, out cruising in car to charge phone battery. Saw tree crews, generators for cable and phone lines from their respective companies, and lines in front of restaurants of people with no power that cannot cook. Arts Beats and Eats looks fully functional, with electricity, of which Ferndale is tied into, although most of us have no power

I really hope that DTE has Ferndale power restored before 9:30pm. I am still waiting on the credit on my bill from the outage last month. Also, from the 300 dollar food lose a 25 dollar credit will not help that on my bill.

You were supposed to have received a letter in the mail about the credit. I got mine and you have to apply for it by calling DTE. The number puts you into a phone waiting system. I have tried to call twice to apply but have been on hold for more than 30 minutes!!!!!!!! Great system. They are hopping to save a few bucks thinking some of us won't call. Cheaper than just giving you a credit. Please EVERYONE call and ask to apply for the power outage credits!!!!!!

We applied online and we still haven't seen them on the bill. We'll be calling again this week.

The first time I called, the day after we got power back, the phone rep gave me the website:
https://www.dteenergy.com/residentialCustomers/problemsSafety/outageCenter/reliabilityCreditRequest.html
I applied and then about a week later I got an email from DTE saying they were sorry for the interruption and that I should call to apply for the credit. As I said below, when I called again about a week ago they told me it was case by case, meaning "it's going to be forever", and then when you are determined to be worthy of the measly $25, you still won't see it for 2-3 billing cycles! What a crock, right?!

I understand the anger at DTE; I lost food and a refrigerator in July due to the outage. But some people (like the guy next door to me) lost their homes. The damage is so extensive the disaster recovery team worked all night to cut the huge tree off of his roof and cover it so no more water would get in. Damage went all the way down to his basement; house may have to be torn down. Others suffered similar damage. The woman's car two doors down got smashed; others lost their cars too. So, while I hate DTE as much as anyone, I am feeling lucky today.

There were two cars that got hit on my street. Luckily we had no damage other than power loss. Unplug your fridge if you are without power so that when it kicks back on, you don't blow the compressor!

@Eric: I called DTE about the bill credit from the last outage about a week ago. The rep on the phone told me that they have to investigate each claim and when they find that you are eligible, you will see the credit 2-3 billing cycles later. With 7,000 customers out last time, we may not see the credit until Decemeber! Not to mention, 2-3 billing cycles? C'mon! You can't just check the info from that fancy new digital meter and see that it didn't function for three days straight in July? So much for our introduction to the "smart" grid.

I don't think they should even have to worry about the digital meters. With so many customers out of power, you would think they wouldn't have to investigate it if the claim was from Ferndale on the indicated dates.

Yeah...if the zip code registers as "Ferndale" it should be an automatic credit every month from June to September!

I'm not even sure what you're talking about? If you're talking that hurricane last week, I don't know what news reports you're going by. But the ones I read have it as perhaps one of the least damaging hurricanes in the history of hurricanes.

I'm all for a lesson about being grateful. But trying to give it by making people feel guilty about someone else's woes usually doesn't work. And then doing it with an example where the folks didn't really suffer as much as you are suggesting works even less.

I can't believe how many trees and limbs were blown over/off in this storm - I've lived here 20+ years - I've never seen anything like this one So much damage to power lines, houses, cars - I don't think DTE could have prevented this. But the system needs to be upgraded - but will be very expensive :(

Mark-tell that to those that lost loved ones, homes, businesses AND still have no power. What reports did you read?Perhaps our definitions of "suffer" are not the same.

No, thanks. I'll just tell it to you, since you're the one who is exaggerating the impact of hurricane Irene in order to influence the tone of the conversation in this comments thread.

20 Dead over 8 states, while tragic, is relatively miniscule next to a tragedy like Katrina or Rita (since you seem to be interested in making your point by comparing an apple to an orange.)

Where did you read hurricane? I mentioned the east coast, not any of the hurricanes.Simply meant that while certainly it is a pain with the power outages here in Ferndale I truly feel for all those who have lost much more.Hopefully all here(and everywhere!)will get through with as little loss as possible.Happy holiday to one and all.

Ok, now your whole story is just falling apart at the seams. There have been two stories of late that you can attribute to "East Coast" residents. The earthquake. And the Hurricane.

You'd better pick one soon or people are going to start thinking you are just making things up as you go along.

I can appreciate that you seem to now be abandoning your original idea of trying to make people feel like they can't express their anger about power outages by shoving larger news stories in their faces. But you still have to take responsibility for what you say, even if it doesn't work out so good for you. (Or you could delete your comments and hope people just forget eventually).

I have also seen this and would like to agree with Mark. Sure there are bigger things going on in the world. There will always be bigger things, but we are on a local site where people are able to join together and find solutions to problems. We clearly can't stop a storm, but if the situation isn't handled properly we have the ability to ban together and find a solution to what we can control. The power situation in Ferndale is a microcosm of the large things going on in the world. We shouldn't watch our residents be put out repeatedly without doing something.

The argument against complaining at all, because there are "worse situations" often creates complacency and discourages action. This isn't just complaining. This is banning together to share our grievances and now I ask "What do we do about them?". It's not just this time, what about the next storm or god forbid the middle of winter? I'm going to do as much as I can to help Ferndale look at competitors for our electric.

DTE has let Ferndale down. It's giving us a bad reputation. Since yesterday I have been told I should move, and a friend told me he was looking at houses here, but not since we've been having the power outages. Ferndale is a great community the city and residents have done as much as they could during these outages, but DTE has clearly got some explaining to do.

I hate to be pessimistic, but I doubt we will ever get the answers we desire from DTE. We are looking at one company who decides to pass the buck any chance they get. Last time it was the excessive heat and energy consumption of the residents that supposedly caused the 3 day blackout. This time it will be the storm. They mention some faulty equipment here and there and then they skim past those facts to place more blame on those who use the energy.

I'm still waiting for some information about these twin transformers that supposedly caught fire a decade ago. We never heard if they had been replaced at the time or if they were even fixed properly in July. I want to see paperwork showing how often they are serviced and when they were originally installed. There is no reason these things shouldn't be documented and transparently available to the public.

You must all be right about the 9:30 it will be back on thing. My husband was going to get a generator but decided not to because DTE said we would be back on tonight. I just want to cry. Thanks DTE for the great holiday weekend
