I was driving south on Paxton, just past University High School, when out of the corner of my eye I saw a black squirrel with what looked like a rolled up piece of paper in its mouth.
As I inched my car closer, getting a different angle, I realized that this squirrel had, in fact, a taco shell in its mouth. Yeah, a crunchy, corn tortilla taco shell.
I hit my brakes (no one was behind me), grabbed my camera and from the confines of the driver's seat snapped 50 pictures of this taco lovin' squirrel. I couldn't resist.

Cute pictures? I don't think so. These animals are not supposed to subsist on food like this.
Unfortunately, this picture reflect the result of poor Code Enforcement and neighbor responsibility. There are Codes in this City that address the proper storage of refuse. Due to the lack of neighbor responsibility, I have had to kill 7 rats in my garage since the end of summer. Perhaps if I through the dead ones on their driveway maybe they will get the hint?
I'm crass, but not that crass. However, Code Enforcement has got to stop chasing purse snatchers and get on the ball. I've contacted him multiple times about improper storage of refuse on property and nothing is done. I'm at the point where I'm about to start making Davey Crockett hats and stew out of those things.
Maybe if I post a "cute" picture of one of those buggers eating chicken wings (which happens daily) they will get the hint?
Should I start sending the City receipts for all of the rodent control expenditures for reimbursement? Or should I wait until my dog chokes to death on a chicken bone left in my yard by one of these fluffy-tailed rats?

Really? What a flip comment. I want to make sure that my kids and dog don't have any problems. I don't know if you're a homeowner, Terry, but this has been a very serious concern in this town for well before Patch has been around.
I guess you haven't sen the rats cross across 8 Mile, have you? I've hit a few.
There is a very serious rat issue in this town and in the town to the north of us. Royal Oak, Berkley; we've all got rat issues that get worse with "cute little squirrels" making it worse by getting into garbage and spreading it out throughout the neighborhoods.
Me thinks you just don't get it on this issue. If you had to deal with it; you'd be just as pissed about it as I (and many others) are.

Methinks it's funny.
You can probably extrapolate tons of issues when looking at a picture of a squirrel eating a taco shell (in fact, that would be interesting to see what people could come up with). Rats as a problem, absolutely. I can see how you can get to that conclusion.

In the simplest there is a much greater issue. One's simple taco squirrel-eating squirrel exemplifies anothers "plague".
In my area of Ferndale, we've been dealing with this squirrel crap for almost 10 years. They tear up gardens, spread trash and eat through plastic garbage cans in order to feed. If they fed on nuts and berries like they should we would not have a problem. But this is a very long standing problem and a health issue. Rats spread all kinds of diseases; that's why the citizenry is supposed to do their part and keep their refuse in secured containers per the Codes.

They weren't all that common in Ferndale up until 5 or 6 years ago either. The past two years seems to have resulted in a sort of boom for 3 or 4 different species of squirrels, (eg; browns, reds, grays, blacks). I've been in this area for the better part of two decades and I can say with certainty that this is new.
