Moms Talk: Where Did That Name Come From?

How did you go about choosing a moniker for you little one, and what were your concerns?

The name you give your baby, in most cases, is forever. Unless your baby is Ron Artest and he changes his name to Metta World Peace.

But, most of the kids aren't Ron Artest.

So, that name, the one you give your child, where did it come from? Did you always know what you were going to name him or her? Did you just open a book and pick one? Do the names of your babies have significant meaning?

Tell us!

My son was easy (Nicholas). My husband and I had that name picked out for a son before we were even married. My daughter was tougher. We ended up choosing Chantal because we are both French Canadian (the only ancestry we share) and we love it. Our only concern was that it would be misprounounced (we say, "shon-TALL") and we were right. People rarely pronounce it correctly - even family. She is already starting to correct people (she's 2.5).

Mary: That's funny about her correcting people.

I wanted to use family names for our children and since I felt two children were all I would have I needed to be careful - my daughter is Kathryne after my Mother and Elizabeth for a middle name just because I liked the pairing of the two - my son was harder - James for a Grandfather and Greatfather (l on each side of the family) Douglas after his Father and Anderson which was my maiden name so he became James-Douglas Anderson Baker. I always thought J. D. Anderson Baker would look good on a business card! Kathryne became Kate and James was called Andy as a nickname from Anderson but in early elementary school he decided he wanted to be James - not Jim or Jimmy but James - it was hard for all of us used to calling him Andy and he was adamant - it stuck and he is James. I guess sometimes kids just know better than we do.

I was named after my father who was named after the lead character of a radio program from the '50s called Terry and the Pirates.

Terry--Not sure if you're aware, but Terry and the Pirates was an comic strip before it was a radio show, by the famous comics illustrator Milton Caniff. Lucky they didn't name you "Dragon" after one of the main villains!

Brad: "Dragon" is my middle name.

I knew it was a radio program before I found put it was a comic strip. After I found out the origins of my father's name, I did a little research. The radio program is what is what I think of first though because I was given a Terry and the Pirates record for a birthday one year.
