Local Valentine's Treats Twice as Sweet

Will you be out shopping for last-minute Valentine's Day gifts today?

If you have something sweet in mind for your Valentine, you're not the only one.

Ann St. Peter, owner of in downtown Ferndale, said business has been up big time in advance of the holiday.

“Valentine's Day is huge,” she said.

Pinwheel Bakery has been offering a variety of love-themed treats including "i love u" cupcakes, Michigan mitten-shaped cookies with pink icing and red hearts over the Detroit area, and more.

St. Peter said the bakery's treats can make for an original gift idea over mass-produced chocolates bought elsewhere.

“Everything we make is made from scratch and everything is locally made,” she said. “We cut and decorate all the cookies ourselves.”

But those looking for a Valentine's Day treat better hurry.

“We're probably not going to have much left for tomorrow,” she said.

There will be plenty of coffee available, however, through , located in the same building. Owner Sandi Heaselgrave is quite a hand at latte art (Where steamed milk is poured into the coffee resulting in a cool design).

Janine Souther, manager of the in Ferndale, said the shop has been bustling with Valentine's Day business.

“We're so busy right now with people getting Valentine's gifts,” she said.

Souther said Tuesday the shop will offer a walk-in special where regular cupcakes are $2 and minis are $1. Specially-designed Valentine's themed cupcakes are offered at $3.50.

“Not everybody loves the little box of chocolates and stuff so I think cupcakes are an excellent idea and they're beautiful, too,” she said. “They just make a nice gift."
