Go Comedy! Stage Heats Up with 'Jersey Show'
Get ready to GTL with a cast straight out of Jersey as Ferndale's own improv theater puts on the poof, swigs Ron Ron juice and jumps into the jacuzzi for a winter production to get "Jersey Shore" fans laughing.
With a show like MTV’s reality hit Jersey Shore and cast members who refer to themselves as Snooki and The Situation, well, wasn’t it just a matter of time before Ferndale’s Go Comedy! Improv Theater would target the pop culture sensation for all the laughs it’s worth? Consider this: New Jersey’s self-proclaimed guidos and guidettes created an acronym for the important things in life – GTL (gym, tan, laundry).
Co-writers Lesley Braden-Phillips and Kathleen Lietz weren’t about to let comic gold pass them by without an original winter production to warm us up this winter. Jersey Show — Season 1 (Abridged) is just that, a hilariously condensed take on the first episodes of MTV’s unabashed look at New Jersey life. Ten local actors lure the audience into the jacuzzi, out on the dance floor and inside a T-shirt shop, where all the action happens in Seaside Heights.
You don’t have to be a fan of the show to laugh your way through this 60-minute mix of scripted antics and sexually charged improv. From the moment the lights flash on, you’re greeted by DJ Pauly D (Tony Castellani) who is hair-gelled to oblivion; a fist-pumping Vinny (Brian Papendrea); and “muscle-bound” Ronnie (Clint Lohman) who is puffing his chest out like he means it. Mike “The Situation” (Brett Thurman) keeps lifting his shirt to reveal a painted on “situation” underneath. You’ve got to see it to believe it.
They get the accents down, too. Snooki (Hailey Zureich) is nothing less than a delight. Her high-pitched squeak is reminiscent of the real deal, and her poof stands proud. It’s also the subject of well-deserved jokes, as would be expected. In a scene when the ladies are getting ready to go to the bar, she asks: “Poof or no poof?” The girls reply in a thickly accented “no” as J-WOWW (Braden-Phillips) adds: “This whole time, I thought you had a tumor up there you wanted to cover up.”
Sight gags are definitely par for the course in Jersey Show. Meet the boys at gym to find Vinny working a Shake Weight — and yes, he’s doing it wrong.
Like the TV show, there are plenty of hookups and breakups – this time, all cleverly and hilariously narrated by two off-stage characters known only as “Whore” and “Skank,” no doubt keeping in touch with the language used on Jersey Shore.
For Ferndale’s John Nawaczyk, who plays the narrator “Whore” as well as five smaller roles, the show was unlike any other he’s done. “I normally do scripted theater,” he said. Nawaczyk most recently appeared in A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Stagecrafters in Royal Oak and will be the assistant director presenting the musical Rent there next month. But he took the leap.
“I’m glad I had the opportunity to get out of my comfort level,” Nawaczyk said. He was pleased with the outcome on opening night.
So was Zureich, also a Ferndale resident. She takes on the character of Snooki with zeal and a cartwheel. Zureich is a Go Comedy! student and intern performing in her first stage show, but you wouldn’t know it. She looks comfortable onstage as she conveys this infectiously sweet character. With about a month of preparation and seven months of viewing the series behind her, Zureich was ready for the role. She described the show as “a ton of fun to be in.”
She wasn’t sure how Jersey Show would be received. That all changed when the audience began to laugh. “Once you hear the audience laughing,” said Zureich, “it’s go time.”
Jersey Show — Season 1 (Abridged) continues at 8 p.m. Thursdays through Feb. 24 at Go Comedy! Improv Theater. Tickets cost $10. Reserve them here or call 248-327-0575.
